Bought this razor for $5 at the local flea market. Germania Cutlery, The Oxford Razor. Scales are broken. Surprisingly, there was no inner washer. Blade is pretty clean. 20 or 30 minutes with some Mothers yielded this. Got some Birdseye Maple that will make beautiful scales.
Nicely done! I love the look of maple! Yeah, you got yer' money's worth...and then some! In my limited experience, the vast majority of old straight razors that I've come across and disassemble do NOT have any bearing washers. Occasionally an old W&B or Joseph Allen has these in place, but they seem to be a rarity.
Wow! What an impressive turnaround there! If you haven't thought of it yet, you may want to put some kind of protectant on those wood scales so they don't get damaged by water or soap. Beautiful handiwork!
Raaorburn, thanks. Thanks! The finish on the scales is CA(superglue), so there's no worries about water or soap.
It's CA. They are actually quite glossy, but the camera does not show it. Maybe the video. You KNOW there'll be one, lol.
Sometimes it is as difficult to catch the gloss on certain objects as it is to shoot reflective metal blades. I've a pair of cocobolo scales awaiting further CA coats (about halfway there).
