Time for a Stephan is righteous stuff. It’s not very bay rummy, imo. However, it epitomizes classic barbershop scent to my nosebrain. It’s what Pinaud Clubman wishes it was. My only complaint is that it fades almost completely in three minutes. By the five minute mark it’s just a beautiful memory. Like the first time you French kissed that dreamy blonde in junior high. I’ve already bought a second bottle Gabel’s presents with what my now somewhat more discerning nose finds in other, perhaps more commonly familiar Bay Rums; namely pimenta racemosa. If I may say, Gabel’s isn’t complex. It’s really just got the one thing going on. I’d venture to say that at this price point it’s likely a fragrance oil. Pretty much all of the smaller bottled/more expensive splashes are more complex as they dry down compared to Gabel’s. Like Stephan, Gabel’s fades very quickly. 5-6 minutes longevity at most. I’m passing up the opportunity to insert a self-deprecating remark here. Use your imagination Suavecito I’ve used only once. It’s reminiscent of Ogallala. I need more time with the Suavecito. I’ve also used the Captain’s Choice once. I’m not sure, but I think I detected a note of black pepper… That’s all for this evening. Now I’m off to check for a status update on my lost-in-transit Sabre
I'll be featuring two Bay Rum products next week for what I will call "Barbershop Week(Sir Hare soap and Stephan A.S.).
Barbershop Week is a great idea, Paul. I want in. You should start a separate thread, it’ll be fun! I don’t use a straight razor, but will happily use only boar brushes for the week, and maybe a hot washcloth for pseudo-authenticity.
I was fooled with my Gabel's purchase. I'd read that there was very little to zero clove scent. I guess they put some in there since. I'll finish my Gabel's bottle, but won't buy again. I did get two other Gabel's in my "package of 3", which are OK. Right, the Stephan is gone in short time, but the skin-food remains, and a barbershop classic it is.
I don’t get much clove recognition with the Gabel’s. We had fresh cloves at one time and I detect nothing like that. It’s interesting how scents are perceived differently by individuals.
"We"? You work for Gabel's? )) You're right about different scent perceptions. I'd say there's more of it(clove)in Gabel's then Stephan, which perhaps explains your Stephan reaction of being not too "bay rummy".
Ha! Happily retired . Paul, having tried the variety of bay runs that have wound up in my den I think I have a pretty good idea of what bay rum smells like. Honestly, the Stephan has the least identifiable bay rum character of them all. That said, as previously opined, it’s a great barbershop scent, easily the most barbershoppish aftershave I’ve ever used. It’s great! I just get very little bay rum from it.
I would say on Stephan, there MAY be clove in there, but the "mixture" of all ingredients is what I like. Nothing really jumps out to me-just a plesant overall scent. I would agree you may not get that Bay Rum scent similar to others you have,, or those of @Primotenore , but I've been happy with it. I guess they put the barbershop pole on the bottle for a reason .
Doing pretty good today. Bought some new sneakers today. Two pairs of Hoka Bondi 8, one black, one grey. Went to the post office - they “said” delivery Monday. Frankly I’ll be very impressed. And I just got back from dinner with my daughter and son-in-law, played with the baby for a few hours, so all’s quite good actually. Tomorrow the whole family is participating in a CancerCare Walk. If the weather is good I plan on enjoying tomorrow, too Have a great rest of your weekend!
I'd say quite normal. Sorry, I just saw your post now. Ooops, I see I already answered your question above, lol.
