I have about 20 post-WWII Gillettes and I've been wet shaving for most of the past 50+ years.

I use all of them at least once in a while but 95% of the time I use either a 1949 SS for a quick and easy shave, or a 1968 Slim on 8 for a really smooth shave.

It's all good. Use whatever floats your boat.

 

Your razor, your blade and whatever soap and face prep it takes? Is what it takes. . That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

 

GSB or Feather, no prep other than a shower, whatever soap I have (usually Stirling). It's all good. After all, it's just a shave.

As far as I know, the main point of the web site is robots on here selling their wares. But for me? The point of my being here is in search of "THE" shave. That smooth, clean feeling and without nicks, scrapes or irritation. I have may razors, many blades, many brushes, many pre shave, many balms, many aftershave splashes and that jar of Noxzema. Each week of shaves is typically 3 or more razors, two or three blades, no less than two shaving soaps and several balms, aftershaves and colognes. The longer I've been here the better the shaves get, and THAT'S what I'm after. To each his own but that's what I'm after.

I've got a couple of fat boys as well as a slim. I usually leave them on one of the milder settings and never change it. I guess I don't really need an adjustable for anything. My thought was that I could change the adjustment if I change blades and need to dial a different brand blade in better, but that didn't prove to be the case. I leave it on the same setting no matter what blade I use. I get great shaves with all of the adjustables, just like I do with most of my fixed razors. While I don't really need adjustables for anything, and they don't really provide me any extra utility, they're pretty cool!

Things change, tastes change but there was a time when I used them all and like them all. I still do but being in here and opinions have changed by opinions. Life's experience so to say.

 

I am quite interested in the history, design, technology, and materials used in shaving technology and I have a fair collection of vintage and modern razors and brushes, but the actual shave itself? Well, it's just something I do after a shower every morning and have done for very many years. It's just like brushing and flossing my teeth really. With the exception of a couple of older models (Rolls Razors ) I could happily live with always using any single razor I own.

But, as you say, to each their own.

Just one more point about vintage Gillette adjustables. While I pretty much leave my Fat Boy and Slim on "8" I think the main reason I favour them is that I like razors with some heft to them. So after getting used to 70-80g adjustables, 40-60g Super Speeds give me a great shave but they do feel a little flimsy to me.

Of course, YMMV.

 

Came here from another forum, so while I am new here I see a few familiar "faces"...

I disagree with the initial post's premise. Adjustables are great. The idea is not to change settings for different parts of the shave (although some people do that) but to find a setting that works for you at that stage in your wet shaving journey and with these blades, and then change when you reach a different stage and / or change to different blades.

My favorite razor is an adjustable.

 

adjustable razors are great because they offer the user setting options or choices..as long as the user understands how said options work.. example i love to use a tech for daily shaes,if a miss 2 days it can become a tug fest..where as an adjustable can be opened up a bit to accomadate longer growth.but..
