I'm 56 and have been DE shaving for 2 and a half years. Been wet shaving since I was around 15 yrs. old. Never really enjoyed or even thought that shaving could be enjoyable until I got into DE shaving. I began out of boredom/economics. I got fed up with the high priced carts and started surfing for DE razors and stumbled on The Shave Den forum. I got my first set up from Joe, at shaveabuck. I picked up a puck of Williams at the local supermarket and began 3 pass shaving with disposable single edge BIC razors until my setup came in the mail. Since then, I am happy to have shared this passion with both of my sons, both members here, one very active and one not. Now I am happy to have enjoyed watching my Grandson joining the tradition as well.

I'm turning 22 in a few months. I never learned how to shave properly, unfortunately it is somewhat the norm nowadays. Anyone can pick up a cartridge razor and shave with it, for some it works for others it doesn't. I tried wet shaving a few years ago when I was about 16, unfortunately it was done very poorly and with a Schick Quattro.

So after years of irritation and terrible shaves I went online looking for some tips. I found a few posts where people had the similar issues as myself and said that a DE razor was a godsend. What the hell is a DE razor?!?! I did some more searching, read a ton of forums, and watched a bunch of youtube videos and here I am. I've been wet shaving for only a few weeks and my technique is nowhere near perfect, but for once in my life I look forward to shaving.

If I have a son in the future I am going to make he doesn't go through all the embarrassing razor burn moments I went through. DE razor from the start.

I'm 50. Was handed an old Gillette Superspeed? when I began shaving at about 16, with no instruction or anything. Cut my face to bits! Starting using an electric as soon as i could get one, and used that most of my adult life until 4-5 months ago. Came across some article online and thought, "I wonder...?" Ordered a Lord L6 from Amazon, and have been learning ever since. Look forward to my daily shave!

I now have 39 razors, 5 brushes, ( with a custom 24mm best badger on the way! ), too many soaps and creams, about a million blades, and an impressive little stash of AS balms, milks, and splashes. Rediscovered a real barber shop too! Gillette Fatboy and Gem G-bar are my daily tools. Planning to start my currently 13 year old son off right!

I'm 61 and have been shaving since I was 15 with whatever disposeable was available then with canned foam. My father did show me how to prep with warm soap and water and rinse and techniques of shaving. I also tried electric razors, but could never get a close shave. There was always a little bristle left. I started with DE and SE shaving in January of this year and am addicted to the experience and pleasure of wet shaving. The last few days I've found cold water shaving to give me an even better shave and happier face.

I started my high school years shaving with a multi blade cartridge razor and very little understanding of what on earth I was doing. I had countless terrible and embarrassing shaves. When your son starts to see some of the hack jobs and terrible razor burns his buddies will have he will thank you.

My dad gave me an electric. I asked him about DE razors once, and he said something to the effect of, "how can you stand those blades?"

So like you, I intend to start my son off with some proper instruction and some good equipment. He's six right now but I figure I'll blink and he'll be 20.

You should buy him his own little DE razor, obviously without a blade, and teach him how to shave. I remember my parents bought me a completely plastic razor with a can of Spiderman shaving cream and I'd stand beside my pops when he was shaving. I didn't really learn much from my dad, but I'm sure the little guy would love it.

53 coming week. Have been DE shaving for only about 1.5 yrs so I'm still in the beginning stages of my collecting/experiencing different razors, blades, aftershaves, soaps and brushes. Thinking back over the years, I find it strange that I can hardly remember what I shaved with, I know I did or I would have had a beard most of my life and thats not the case. Thats how uneventfull shaving was until I jumped into the DE groove. I do recall starting with the single blade disposable and then the double blade followed by the 3 blade. I bought my first DE razor in Dec 2010, the Merkur HD 34c and some derby blades along with a Tweezerman badger brush and some almond col Conks puck soap. Since then, its been a great adventure. I have recently managed to procure a 59 Gillette FB which is currently sitting at Reliable Electroplating getting its new Rhodium finish and an AoS Silvertip, and thanks to a forum member a 4125/2 Thater. I have also accumulated lots of Shark and Feathers.
This forum is very theraputic and I appreciate all the great topics and learnings I have experienced over the past months picking all of your brains. Thank you all..

If you are anything like me, you'll see him standing at the sink doing his own thing wondering how in hell he hasn't made an appreciable cut yet.....My boy is halfway through the year to 14 and has that terribly stringy 13 year old's mustache that he thinks is a true sign of manhood as opposed to impending manhood and refuses to shave except once every 4 to 5 weeks or so. He loves my ABC pocket razor with a Voskhod. He also likes his Slim Adjustable on 4. It is a harrowing experience every time and I'm glad I'm there for it :D He is probably about 10 shaves away from being able to do it unwatched :scared007::scared003: .

My daughter on the other hand, took to traditional shaving like a duck to water. No issues and loves it. SWMBO is becoming interested in injectors, so I may be able to pull her away from the dark side one of these days.

I'll be 39 next month. Since I was 14 or 15 I've used every kind of disposable and cartridge razor and even a couple of cheap electrics. I'd never had a good shave, and always found it a chore. I've been wet shaving since January of this year, and will never ever ever ever ever ever ever go back, ever. I'm trying to get SWMBO into it, and she is coming along, slowly, but she's interested.

I'm 45 and have been wetshaving and using a DE razor just over 3 months. I had great results with a Mach3, Fusion, whatever, but hated shaving so I only shaved twice a week and never on vacation. Now I'm shaving nearly every day and greatly enjoying it.

45 as well. Always been wet shaving. As a kid I watched my dad shave every day for some time. We were living on a ship then and my bunk was next to the water heater. He used a Gillette G2 and Old Spice soap. I remember my granddad had a Shick. I didn't appreciate the quality if it then (I can hit myself on the head now! Wish I had known, so I might have learnt from him before he went over to electric shaving and tossed the Shick away... maybe in my direction)

Wen I started shaving myself I used cartridge razors and a Palmolive shave stick & a cheap boar brush. Because a brush and shave stick were 'messy' I even turned to cans of goo... I didn't like to shave, but since I still don't grow a full beard (I still have bald patches om my cheeks), I had to shave during weekdays so as not to look shabby. Weekends and vacations were off.

I started to think about DE shaving about a year ago, for price's sake. Watched Mantic 59's vids (A very big 'thank you' to him!) and last summer took the plunge. Never looked back. Since last winter the bug has taken a firm hold of me. Shaving has become something I look forward to, so it is now a seven days a week joy!

I'm 34 been wet shaving for 4 years now. I go back and forth between straights, SE and DE's. Just what I'm in the mood for. My son is six and he already loves to shave with me no blade of course. He mixes up lather just as good as me or better! Here is pics of my son getting his shave on!:D

My Pop didn't show me how to use the blade and lather as he's wearing a beard. I've started wet shaving at the tender age of 35 and that was a bit over 3 years ago. First with straights, then with SEs and now with DEs. Never looked back since!

    Hi Vern,

I am the same age as you and have the same shaving history. However, I went from DE to Injectors then to the plastic throw aways. Then about 10 years ago I got tired of the BIC and Schick plastic scene and canned foam and went to electric razors. It was only until the beginning of this year that I re-discovered DE wet shaving and I will never go back . I am only glad that I was enlightened to go back to the way my father and grandfather shaved and enjoy it now immensely.

I'm 21. I started shaving regularly at age 18 when I left for basic. In those days, I only had maybe 5 mins to do morning hygiene before rushing outside for formation and morning PT. I would just use disposables or whatever cartridge handle and foam I could get my hands on and go to town. I got my first wet shave in August about this same time last year. In October, I used my dad's DE razor and tore my face to hell. I didn't start getting confident with it until February of this year and started on that regularly. I can't remember the last time I bought any cartridges or even the last time I actually used one. I know it was in at least April for drill. I also have 4 razors, several soaps and creams, a few aftershaves.

48 year old male...Started shaving at 12 and was a daily shaver by 14 (I hit puberty young). I used my fathers Slim Adjustable or Flare from age 12-18, then an Atra and the sometimes a SuperSpeed from 18 through 25.

From 25-47 I had used mostly disposable Personna or store brand double/triple blade cartridge type razors. Never got into using an electric as I could not get a close shave the few times I had tried them while in the Corps.

Returned back to "classic" shaving because of severe irritation from cartridges and to reconnect with memories of my father who has been gone for 28 years.

Although many years had passed since my last DE shave, when I returned in December I found that it was like riding a bicycle. I may not have had the best shaves during that first week, but they where still better than any cart.

The biggest area that I have had improvement has been in my lather making. I went from fair to a master lather maker if I do say so myself.

Beside DE's, I have a a huge fondness for a few SE's, mostly the 1912's, the G-Bar and Injectors. One of these days I want to pick up a straight and give it a try, but for now, I will limit straight razor shaves as birthday gift to myself from an old time barber.
