I found this Apollo Mikron razor at a local farmers market and was surprised to see an adjustable that wasn't a Gillette. After doing some research I was hoping that @Jake or @GDCarrington might be able to tell me a little more about it's history and age. It is in as found condition since I would like some advice on the best way to clean it. (Scrubbing bubbles ok?)
I could be wrong but the logo and the fact it has Soliingen written on it makes me think of Merkur, which makes me wonder if this is an early version of the progress, but I could be way off. Just a guess.
I think that is the Merkur Mercury logo on the bottom, isn't it? Then again, maybe it is an image of Apollo.
Very Nice looking razor. I would have scooped that up as well if I would have happen upon it. Did you get to shave with it yet?
Looks clean enough, as is. Scrubbing bubbles is always okay. Apollo Micron was German made in the 1930's. The Progress was Merkur's way to make a cheaper version. I don't think Apollo morphed into Merkur.
@Misphit Here is more information on this. http://www.likelyanswer.com/11002531/Apollo-Razor http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/german-made-apollo-de-razors.23715/ APOLLO (<1932): Friedrich Herkenrath, Solingen-Merscheid. On razors and razor blades. Friedr. Herkenrath 'Ben-Hur' Solingen-Merscheid: Kluckstrasse 34 in 1932 and 1939. Brand names: 'Apollo' (1943, previously used by Balke & Schaaf of Solingen), 'Ben-Hur', 'Pacific'. Razor-blade maker. (Courtesy of Razor makers). This razor was more than likely made in the 1950s and / or 1960s. Apollo still manufactures blades (they got out of the DE razor manufacturing business years ago). http://www.apollo-herkenrath.de/ BTW: Great score!
Merkur`s Progress Dates from the same time , 50ies, so it`s a competitor not a downgraded Mikron, Yours is in a very nice state , most of the Mikrons , the parts of the head, are showing corrosion to the zinc alloy(Zamak).
