Too bad you can't see me laughing over here. That rule was true 3-5 years ago, but nowadays the threat lies within the browser. Cross-site-scripting, DNS-spoofing and many more things that can happen to basically anyone anywhere no matter how good you are with computers. And, whether you like it or not, Internet Explorer is on top of the list of insecure browsers.

You also mentioned the price of their products:
I paid 1500€ for my new iMac. I'd have to spend 600€ alone for a new 24" screen (as I said, I despise those cheap TN-screens), then add a great keyboard, and extremely great working mouse for 100€ (together) and 150€ for Windows Vista. This leaves you with 650€ to buy a computer with a Core 2 Duo 2,8GHz, 2GB of Ram, HDD, case, graphics card, controller cards, remote control, speakers and everything else. Oh, and silent it should be, too.
Good luck finding a machine fitting these specifications and I'm not even talking about incorporating all these components into the screen itself to save space...

    Each to his own.

Its unfortunate that in 3 years of owning my computer I've yet to get a virus of any sort. I have McAfee and norton in stalled, updated, and running, but not actively interupting my life. I just do a scan with them once a month and have yet to ever find anything. Spy ware is not horrible. I may have a couple random pieces pop up after a month of web surfing. I, as a PC user, would never use IE as a browser and most PC users dont use it either. Most mac users also use firefox, just like PC users. I just couldnt call 3000$ a steal on a computer. But to each his own.

I guess I'll put my plug in for linux/ubuntu.

I first started about a year or so back when I purchased a laptop and got vista along with it. It wasn't a terrible OS, but it was sucking my system resources down to no end and slowing every program. I was broke, needed an alternative, and installed Ubuntu (7.10 at the time). I haven't looked back.

Money: Its a free open source OS (More money for hardware).

Viruses: None (Well, the last time I checked, there were only a handful, and you had to install them yourself:happy102).

Programs: There are alot of programs that run natively in linux. For those that are restricted to Windows, you can run alot through an emulator like Wine, or through Virtualbox. Additionally, you can almost always find an open source program that does the same thing as the windows program.

Support: The Ubuntu community is very involved with finding workarounds to hardware issues and software problems/questions. If you have a problem, chances are that someone has already figured it out and posted a solution to it.

@Joel: I've got nothing to add to your post :happy088

So, yesterday was the big day: My new iMac arrived - precisely at the moment when I started to unplug and remove my old machine - talking about perfect timing. :eatdrink047
I also used this opportunity to ... err ... clean up behind my desk and rearrange my workspace.

Here it is - my move to a new machine in pictures and words:

my old setup - the notebook has been my primary machine for quite a few months now and the old computer had only been used for watching DVDs...

Absolutely, Rene! This is in fact my christmas-present, but I decided to buy it early as I will be quite busy at university during the next months and wanted to complete the migration before that time.

Leopard is great, too! I've used Tiger quite a bit before, but Leopard really has some cool new features. I'm backing up my machine with "time machine" as I'm typing this :D

Well, technically it's BSD-based and not Linux-based.. Free-BSD users would shiver (and probably flog you publicly!) if you call BSD Linux ;)

Nice Klaus! Welcome to the real world!
