All factors combine to form the total package that is your daily shave. If you feel like you have lather making figured out, but switch to a new brand of soap you'll be introducing a new factor. The good news is TOBS is a good soap so if you haven't used it yet shouldn't take long to be getting acceptable lathers. Are you also switching blades? Having two variables, plus trying to figure out razor handling technique can put you back to the start where you might get a great shave and won't know why, along with problems that can't be diagnosed. So the Rule is for teaching yourself basics. Then a Focus to experiment with shifting different products in for evaluation.

James, you're making great progress. I like your updates, and I hope you're having a great time with the family in London. We were there for a few days last year, and we had a lot of fun.

The chin can be tough. After the WTG pass, try shaving XTG in one direction or the other or possibly in both directions. That should help. After this becomes automatic, stretch your skin from below your chin and try a real easy ATG (S-N) pass - very short strokes and go slow. No need to rush the process. It's better to leave some sandpaper on your chin until you gain some experience than to deal with those pesky nicks.

Beautiful photo and a nice set up today, Joseph! It's hard to beat the NEW LC loaded with a Feather. It looks like you'll knock off the HC&C soap sample fairly soon.

No changing of blades, no. I am using Astra SP (3 then out). I won't change the soap either - I will resist in order to speed my progress (no rushing, mind) in the long run.

I'll go with the extra XTG touch up passes for sure. I am not bothered about the feel of sandpaper for the moment, but I cannot deal with visible whiskers!!!:angry019::angry032:

Random question for all DE users...

At the end of your shave, do you:

    a) disassemble the razor, clean it and dry it, clean and dry the blade, then reassemble for next use?

    b) rinse the razor under the tap and just put it aside?

    jluc smelling pretty

I just loosen the handle, rinse thoroughly, pat dry. I leave the handle loose to complete drying until my next shave.
I give my razors a good wipe down when I swap the blade.
I'm curious to hear others routine.

Buy the new tub. Then set it on your counter with a date written on it. It's your finish line.

    @jtface -

    For DE/SE and injector:

    Hot water daily rinse.

Scrubbing Bubbles (foaming bathroom cleaner) every blade change, mostly to remove soap and mineral residue.

    Never wipe a blade dry.

b - no worries with this approach. Every so often when I change the blade, I will use a soft toothbrush and liquid soap to clean off any accumulated soap residue from the razor. Then I return my Bride's toothbrush to its proper location. :lyrtuy5:

I do sometimes take the blade out and strop it, either on leather or my palm. Be very careful wiping off a blade. Bad cuts can happen quickly. Most of the time I rinse the razor, put it in a stand to dry, then put it away. Part of my focus this month is using up all the blades that are in seven different razors in my cabinet, and I have no idea how many shaves are on each.

Most of the time, I change blades after three shaves. A DE blade stays in the razor until it is changed. I handle the blade as little as possible to keep from accidentally cutting myself or inadvertently dulling the blade edge.
