I will be interested to see what happens on day five as well. I'm starting to regret canceling my Mongoose when my turn came up on the waiting list. Who am I kidding, I still have tons of razors to try
I'm planning to join the SEptember focus by starting off alternating my J1 and L1 injectors just to see if I can detect any difference. Later in the month, depending on waiting lists and replating service deliveries I hope to add in either the Mongoose or a Gem and do a blade comparison to find the best combination. I don't shave everyday so there won't be a daily post, but hopefully I can add something to the discussion.
Would you guys says 7 on Gillette adjustable's is a very nice setting for a close comfortable shave? It seems to be a common number used by most everyone who shares what settings they use.
For me #7 is a perfect setting for a close comfortable shave. I usually do 3 passes and a clean up if necessary.
Phoenix Comparison Focus Day 28; Homemade PS Oil VDH Boar Brush La Cigale SS Phoenix Dbl OC Stirling Unscented PSB The Veg I had some more time this morning, so I went with the La Cigale again. It is not the easiest soap to lather, but I got it going. It seems to be decent, but I will need to try some more work on the lather. The Big Ben blade has smoothed out some, but is still not my favorite blade out there. I'll post a write up about what I have found between the razors tomorrow. I am gearing up for SEptember.
I thought 8 and 9 were the best for me, but there seems to be a general consensus that the higher numbers (>6) are better.
Shave 12 27/08 Pre: none Soap: Tabac Brush: Vie Long Custom Razor: Kai Excelia non folding Blade: Feather Pro (2) AS: Old Spice Musk 2nd shave with the Feather and 2nd time in a row with no nicks. Something I don't think I managed with a Kai blade. BBS results in 2.5 passes. Looks like the Kai blade doesn't work well for me in a Kai razor. Who would have thought. Used up the last of the Tabac sample. Can't say I'm sad to see it finish. I won't be buying it.
I think that 7 is close to the "the number that is perfect", if it exists. For me, the number exists at 8. This is definitely a YMMV situation.
Razor: Gillette Slim (1965)(7) Blade: Gillette Platinum (6) Brush: Whipped Dog Silver Tip Badger, Black/Marble Handle-22/65 Soap: Synergy Shaving Soap Bay Rum A/S: Captain's Choice Bay Bum Day 29 Outstanding shave his evening. Outstanding is better than DFS, but not quite BBS. IMHO, I really like the Synergy Bay Rum Soap, and the Captain's Choice Bay Rum A/S. The slight glitch in the shave is this brush. I believe it has to much loft for a Silver Tip brush. This makes it very floppy and a little difficult to apply soap. I have a few Silver Tip brushes and I don't have any issues with them. I set those brushes myself and 49-50 is my max. the Gillette Slim setting for me is #7. I get a very close and comfortable with that setting.
I went from 4 to 6 and stayed there. It was noticeably more efficient for me than 4. I liked it so I left it there. I'm still evaluating blades, so I didn't want to spend time with different settings at this point. You'll need to experiment to find the right level for you.

August 30 Shave 19 The shave went very smoothly except for nicking my ear and one tiny weeper. After three passes I could not feel any irritation but then again because of Iced Key Lime I am not sure I could feel anything with my frozen face. I went for the 4th pass with Lather Catcher and BBS. Apply Alum and success only a small twinge of irritation. Summary of the month: I am not sure if I will have time for a SR shave tomorrow or not so here goes: It was up and down through out the month. I would get some great shaves with little irritation and then back the irritation but I did finish strong with the last several shaves little to no irritation. I will call it a success and next month I will focus on a closer shave and drop the DE or SE 4th pass. This has become my favorite thread for several reasons; first the cookies, oh wait that was last month. Writing about the shaves has increased both my focus and desire to reach my goal. It is inspiring to see other make progress on their journey and I enjoy all the support. Plus the pictures are cool! Thank you all for making this the best thread and a bid shout out to @Bama Samurai and everyone else who has given encouragement and tips to me. August Focus - Slim and Feather AC August 29 Razor - 1964 Gillette Slim (J1) Blade - (2) Brush - Vie Long 12601 Soap - Tabac Post - Cold water, Alum, The Veg Stayed with yesterday's setup but dialed down to 2 on the Slim. Fantastic lather, and a fantastic two pass to a DFS. It took an extra bit of touchup on 2 than it did 3 but nothing major. Still think 3 is the best setting for the Kai. Off to the races early as usual on Saturday after that. Hope your day went great!
Well you have the spot on your neck, I have the spot on my cheek. Must just be a part of the Feather SS experience.
Depends on the blade. I'm everywhere from 3 on Feather and Kai to 9 on Voskhod and Sharp Star. I do think the high range is the best in most cases, though, unless you're using a super sharp like the Feather.
