Saw that but it's too much to find out if it smells how I like. The company sells by a 12 case for $24 + $12 shipping. If I knew I'd dig it...maybe I'd ask the wife for Christmas.
Not at all anymore, but that is not to say I never would. The first aerosol foam I used was the Barbasol in the red, white and blue can. Back then, canned foam was pretty much the only widely available option. It worked OK for me, but just OK. The canned shaving gels came out, and I found them to work better than the Barbasol. Kiss My Face gave me much better shaves than either canned foam or gel, so I have little reason to go back. Of course, Barbasol might have changed their formula in the ensuing decades. Perhaps it is worth another try. Judge you for what?
If you enjoy it then use it. Its your shave. For me though. Ill never used canned cream or goo again.
I use the Yellow Can pretty much every day. I've tried a lot of soaps and creams and still appreciate the enjoyment of whipping up a nice Proraso Green or TOBS Grapefruit cream but in the end when it comes to achieving an outstanding, comfortable shave, I've never found any handmade soap or cream to give me an appreciably better shave than the Barbasol. About a year ago I started developing a bad shirtcollar irritation on both sides of my neck and thought I was becoming allergic to the Proraso Green or had a heavy hand with the R41 I'd just started using. I went back to my Krona for a week with no improvement then stopped using the Proraso. In the end, it turned out to be a Vulfix Best Badger brush I'd recently started using and was the last thing I suspected. Even though I'd never had any irritation with the low-end boar brush I'd been using, I decided to try some of the Yellow Can that seemed to get good reviews as far as canned creams go to lay off using any brush at all. Within 2 days (also back to using the R41) my neck was back to normal and I was getting surprisingly outstanding shaves using the Barbasol and my face felt great afterwards. I've been shaving with DE's for about 2 years now and consider my beard and beard growth "average." I have to be clean-shaven at work and can't get by without shaving every day. I'd been using a brush and creams exclusively up until I experienced the neck irritation from that particular badger. I hadn't used any canned stuff since I started. I realize that particular brush just didn't work for me: it didn't turn me off to brushes altogether. After using the Barbasol with the R41, I started becoming skeptical of the theory of the brush application of a a cream "making your whiskers stand up so they cut better." Here I was just slathering some Barbasol on my face with my hands (after the shower) and my shaves were just as close with zero irritation anywhere as they were with any other cream or soap I'd tried with a brush. I mean, when you get a shave where you can barely feel any stubble anywhere and nothing on your face is sore, that's about as good as it gets for me. I don't know. I suppose it's not for everybody. Maybe I just have the face/skin for it. I decided to save the higher-end stuff for special occasions and to use the Barbasol on a daily basis to save some time. I just sit the can in a sink full of hot water so it warms up while I shower. I will say I can't pull this shave off as easily with any of my razors other than the R41. I can get a good shave, but it takes more work. It's quite effortless with the R41. In case I didn't rave about how much I enjoy this razor, consider this my rave. It's a superb shaver and despite the horror stories, I have never once cut myself, nicked myself or experienced any razor-induced irritation from the thing, even using Barbasol and I'm not even particularly careful with it. Out of the dozen razors I own, this was the easiest one to pick up and adjust to without much of a learning curve at all. At least for me, it's a very efficient and comfortable razor to use. I always use Feather blades in it: new blade every 2 shaves. This is definitely a YMMV endeavour. I'm not badmouthing any traditional methods/soaps/creams/brushes, I'm just saying in my case I get just as good a shave using Barbasol as I do with brush-applied creams or soaps and I decided that on most days, if there's no other benefit that lasts me all day, I can live without smelling menthol, eucalyptus or grapefruit on my face in the morning for the convenience and to save some time.
I've been letting the can of Barbasol soak in the sink with hot water and a mug on top to keep it from floating while I take my shower. Makes for a nice warm lather through the shave.
Interesting. I recently forgot my shaving soap on a bussiness trip, and picked up a can of the Original. This was my favorite shaving cream when I was catridge shaving. I did my normal prep, and tried to use the shaving cream. It seemed to pull the moisture off my face, and felt like I was dry shaving, with both a straight and a DE. It was the worst shave I had had in a couple of years. Do you find it leaves enough water on your face to soften the whiskers? For me at least, I enojoy the soap and brush part of our hobby as much as the razors. I will stick with my other methods, because they work for me. Glad you found soemthing simple that works for you.
I do find the original Barbasol a bit more drying. I bought a small can to go in my dopp kit. I use the aloa variety at home. I do find I have to apply a lot of water before applying the cream. Sometimes adding a bit of water with my finger tips after putting it on. I found if I put it on a little thin not really thick at all. About a quarter size squirt to start, applying it in cycles rubbing the stubble firmly. I find it not to be as drying and enough slickness to provide a comfortable shave. Now I have noticed that Barbasol has changed the formula a bit. The formula online does not match my old can. I wonder, if like a lot of companies do, they may have ruined the product by tweaking it. It will be awhile before I find out though as I have two old cans.
I'm late getting in on this but I want to sing the praises of barbasol. I currently am out of barbasol but I go through a couple cans a year. I enjoy the green (aloe vera), the yellow (lanolin), arctic chill (menthol). I love the scent of the original but it is my least favorite as far as performance. I wouldn't judge anyone negatively for using barbasol. I have had many very good shaves using this humble product.
I still have a can of it in my medicine cabinet that I use when I don't have time to whip up lather. It works OK, but I wouldn't use it all the time.
Well I guess it is ok if you like nostalgic and I do BUT - there are so many great soaps and crèmes today for one to enjoy. It would be like going back to no Micrwave or electricity. Just aint right
I've always liked Barbasol , but I may pay more attention to it now that I learned Babe Ruth and Knute Rockne sponsored it. Those fellas were pretty manly!
