Shims will increase the gap between the baseplate and top of the razor, allowing for a potentially more aggressive, close shave.
I like using shims to get that little bit of extra aggression out of an already perfect blade/razor combo... Not all people like using them, so of course "YMMV"...
Good pick up Steve..I guess like Obama "I misspoke"..Let me amend my statement to "almost perfect" blade/safety razor combo(you missed blade/razor combo)...
i posted the same thread on a different site and got tons of negative posts about how only the wax must bother me, cause no one else is complaining. i was so mad, i knew i wasn't the only one. i HATE that wax also. it just doesn't need to be there. anyhow, i tried some personna blues because i was searching for a blade with no wax, and is all i gotta say is, them blades is sharp. they do give me some redness afterwards, so been shaving with the slim on 2-3 and helps. but even know i hate the wax, one of my favorite blades, the bluebird, has low wax, and if you make sure to install blade with wax facing up, no problems at all. the bluebirds are definitely a blade you should at least try once. there just so darn smooth for me. but, im sure my quest for finding great blades is not over, i mean what fun would it be if you found your match, all the excitement is the hunt. never heard about lords being wax free, so i may just have to try some of them.
I wont lie, I hate the wax. It bothers me. But I wont make it worse than it is. It's only wax, and it just takes a few more minutes that once in a while when I clean my razor. So it's not something that refrains me from using the Astra or any other blade with wax. That said, I'd of course prefer they were without wax - it truly serves no purpose at all!
I thought "perfect" was a synonym for "baseline expectation." See also: 'They expect an umpire to be perfect on Opening Day and improve every day from then on.' - attributed to American League Umpire Nestor Chylak
I just started using Astra SP's which have wax on them but it washes right off with hot water. Does the wax on other blades not wash off? I haven't used any other blades with wax on them so I'm just asking.
You shouldn't let people make you feel bad for having an opinion. The next time someone is negative about it, just tell them that the wax gets in the way when you try to put them in apples at Halloween. BTW, Personna Med. Preps. are the best blades and they are perfectly wrapped withour glue.
I've heard people say this before, but I've never been able to "wash off" the wax spots with water from my tap. My tap water only gets to about 125 or 130 degrees, definitely not hot enough to melt this stuff off a blade, at least not in my experience.
I'm surprised that Voskhod blades haven't been mentioned. No wax or glue spots and they give the most comfortable, closest shave of any blade. They also work in every razor. Of course, YMMV.
those voskhods, are they the ones that say teflon on them? i def gotta give them a try. does anybody know any information on who makes voskhods? are rapiras made by the same company? hopefully they stay in business, iv heard good things about them blades.
They are very close. I would try a 5-pack of each and see what works best for you. This may interest you: http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/blade-safari-pif.35449/
