I can't vote you've left out my favorite bestshave.net #6 horse.. After trying out an example of each brush when I first began "traditional" shaving. I've been happily using my #6 horse now going on 3 years..
The funny thing is that you will eventually own both, so its just a matter of which you purchase first. I would go with an Omega Boar first, and like the other guys mentioned, a WD silvertip. You can easily get both for the price you were willing to pay for the silvertip alone. Break in the boar and you will see why it has such a strong following. Good luck
Many people say the #6 is made of boar. While I can't swear to it one way or the other, in researching it I've seen pictures of the horse that the hair is supposedly taken from. It's a native born Turkish work/farm horse and the tail and mane color "at least of the horses I saw" matches the color of the hair used in the #6. So for now at least I'm willing to take bestshaves word that it's horse hair. . Either way it is a wonderful brush at a fantastic price.. Of course I must agree with @JR Reyes also, especially if you have "AD" as bad as I do, eventually you will aquire at least one sample of each brush. Don't forget synthetic. After all it's only fair to try all of the different types. Oh an @Omelmad I don't have ten #6's yet! I only have five as of now.. I tend to order a #6 whenever I place an order for something else with bestshave. I'm hoping to collect enough #6's to begin reknoting some vintage brushes I've collected over the years.
This isn't even a question - I've never yet found a boar that was any better than a cheap "pure" badger, never mind silvertip! That being said, the best performing boar I ever did find was the cheap Turkish #6! The love for boars has always been a mystery to me... poor capacity, poor flow thru... I must be doing something wrong...
I like both but I do love the way my Semogue piggy attacks a harder soap. So if I had to choose only one for the rest of my life...never mind, that thought is depressing.
I've been on a boar kick for over a year and I don't think I'll be going back any time soon. My three badger brushes are gathering dust.
I like mine also, but as far as I can tell from the brush and search on that big internet, that brush has never seen a horse in it's life
It never fails to amaze me just how two extremely intelligent, good looking, and all around wonderful people can be at opposite ends of the brush spectrum. Such is life I reckon. Not a boar exactly, but you get the idea...
I just got a boar, OS Cobalt Blue to match my Mug. To rough for me, but good for bowl lathering hard pucks. Also got a Whipped Dog Silvertip 30/45. Soft with backbone, I love this brush. I use mostly creams, Castle, TOBS, and my Cella, and this brush works great, and you can't beat the price.
