In rewriting Maxwell, he essentially removed the scalar component from the calculation. Tesla was in this field also. The true motivation for writing Special Relativity was the unexpected result of the Michaelson-Morley light wave experiment.

    You're the best.

Honestly, I mostly just think aether is a really cool word. Looks cool, sounds cool. It's almost as good as my all-time fave word, schadenfreude!

My favorite word is ahmoan. It's a southern US word that replaces the phrase: I am going to. As in the sentence: Ahmoan go the the store.

It's all pretty simple really. Aether you accept it, or you don't. Aether way, doesn't really make any difference.

Shrubbery still works for me as an unusual and interesting word, thanks to Monte Python.

I saw a great old video lecture by Richard Feynman where he describes, at length, how photons are responsible for all forces in the universe. Then he points out the circular logic of his theory and admits that photons are just a mathematical convenience and probably don't even exist. So, there you have it: photons are just figments of our imagination, and no one has any idea why anything in the universe happens. I find his explanation very satisfying.
