I've never gotten the mounds of lather seen in SOD or shaving videos either. I don't know how useful they really are to a good shave. I use a straight razor now and need a wet thin lather, anyhow. I face lather with shave cream and sometimes soap and don't need a special bowl. Even with a soap, you can wet your face, rub on the soap and lather, if you want to.
