Yeah, it took a little bit, but after being able to enjoy it thoroughly the other night, I am really liking it. Yes, I do nick myself because I am a noobie, but that will pass. Now, I smell the soap and look for scuttles! Goooo Menthol!!!!!!
I alway do a full ATG pass. Of course Im a three pass shaver for the most part 1 WTG, 2 XTG and 3 ATG. it works as long as I have good lather and prep.
I always do first a WTG pass, and then I rinse, re-lather, and then I do an ATG pass, but very lightly - perhaps 2 strokes, or 3 at the most. If there is still any stubble, I don't really mind. Only on Saturday and Sunday, I go for complete BBS.
++1 On face mapping. It will serve you well no matter the razor(s) you end up sticking with. YM will NOT V! Everyone's face holds plenty of surprises and besides, WTG and a couple XTGs should give you a visually great shave in the here and now.
+1 what dilly-b wrote. You must face map. When should you do the ATG pass? You'll know when you're ready. If you can't do WTG and XTG passes w/o blood or irritation, maybe wait and work on technique some more. If you do a ATG pass and it doesn't work, just regroup and try again at a later time. You can do it, just be patient and you'll get there.
I always thought I was odd in that I have always done ATG for my second pass. That's the way I learned from my Grandfather 50 years ago. It just seemed natural to do it that way when I started shaving. I have never gotten along very well with XTG, though. For my third pass, I usually just dip my fingers in the lather and find the places that need a little touch up and hit them ATG. If I do a third pass, I end up with a BBS shave.
I feel like I'm getting the hang of my ATG passes with out cuts and blood everywhere. The only thing is, I am not getting that close shave on my neck, especially between the neck and the jaw. Very difficult part in my opinion. My WTG and XTG passes are great. The ATG pass works really well on my face and parts of my neck, just those nooks and crannys that are a pain!
