My 13 inch Llyn Idwal is to gorgeous of a stone to be homeless. For the special edge it delivers, it needs to have a home worthy of it. I have made some furniture quality boxes before, but I wanted to try a vintage style box with a scrolled bottom. Trying to find wood large enough took some time until remembering I was giving a large slab of mystery wood a few years ago, so let’s give it a go. Ripped out a blank on the table saw. I used a bandsaw on the bottom and to split into two pieces. Used a router table to hollow out for the stone. I wanted to router a edge on the top, but the wood was now to thin, so a had to pass. After all the work and sanding, the wood was to Blonde and look new. Used a sealer stain to give it a nice aged look. I know where the few boo-boo’s are, but it came out nice and it is a worthy home for my stone

Nice job. I had heard, somewhere in the past, that American Indians, I think it was the Navajo, always left a break in their design, whether it be silver work or blankets or whatnot. This was done because they believed that a perfect object would create a window that evil spirits could use to enter this world. I don't know if it's true or not, but I've used that excuse on many of my projects.:happy102:

Thank you all for the kind words

Thanks for the vote of confidence

It is a nice piece of real estate and it delivers up a smooth edge

Very seldom did I use “perfect” and “project” in the same sentence

With the success of my last box, time to try again. Always wanted to make a box for my vosgienne, but being 8x3, did not wood large enough that I liked. Used the drop pieces and glued up bookmatched to get a interesting grain pattern. This box is a simple rectangular shape, nothing fancy. Glued up over height, cut in half, trimmed for depth and stained. A beautiful box for a beautiful stone

Been wanting to make some boxes for my 8” and 9” coticules, but did not have any wood large enough that impressed me. Until I found a rough cut walnut 4x4 at a yard sale. With that problem solved, I ripped up a 12” slug to work with. Cherry picked the best for the tops, cut up the remaining for sides and end. To break up them all looking the same, I did a inlay on one. Some glue, some sanding, and some hardware and I have three coti condos
