I never thought I would actually do this ... but I did. Bought my first Straight Razor on Ebay ... I guess this was a pretty good score for 20 bucks I know pretty much nothing about this razor - I bought it because I think it looks nice Newbliss is a village in Ireland, so "Gaelic" makes sense here. On the other hand it says "German Make" - well, maybe the steel is from Germany? Anyways - sending it to a guy from the German Wet Shaving Forum, he will check and hone the razor for me. The blade is a little off-center so it touches the scales when I close it, but other than that it looks really good. Now I need a strop - and the adventure can begin.
straight razors seem to multiply. be careful the rabbit hole runs deep one razor two half a dozen strops pastes hones finishing stones more razors glaring looks from the wife and the postman not to mention the time reading then the adjunct stuff hone holders water buckets funny clay looking marks on the wife's towels maybe you should run away now, or dive right in, but don't say you weren't warned.
Very nice score! There are plenty of folks here to help, just check out the 'What straight did you use today'. They helped me out a lot. Go sloooooow!
Sweet! Take your time, pay attention, and respect the blade. Stick with it and you'll be having great shaves in no time.
This is what I want to eventually end up using. I splurged recently and got a shave at my barber and was immediately hooked. I didn't think it would be best to start with a straight so I'm going with either a DE or injector. But now I'm thinking maybe...
Thanks for all the input, guys. Yes, I will definitely start slow. Read a lot, watch some instruction videos. I think it will take another one or two weeks before I can actually start shaving with this razor. There's a guy here in Berlin who makes nice strops: I think I'll contact him next week and see what he recommends for a newbie.
Welcome to the dark side, the draw of the dark side is strong and the cookies are pretty good too. I highly recommend getting it professionally honed. You do want to start out with a properly honed razor. I think Rasurpur has a honing service. I bought a razor from them that came with a nice edge. Nice looking razor, well done.
