    Decadent December!!

    December 31

    Razor - Soviet Consul
    Blade - [IMG] (3)
    Soap - Arko
    Brush - Semogue 620
    Post - Alum, Nivea

Final day of 2016 and the final shave of the year. And, the final day of DECADENT December. What a fantastic month checking out some truly amazing gear on here, great photos, shananigans everywhere and over 2000 posts and counting. Thanks to everyone for taking the second full year of this thread out with a BANG!!

As for my final shave, well what could be more decadent than a Voskhod in a Soviet adjustable set on max kill? That isn't too far off of the feeling of this razor at 9. Way past the aggressiveness of a Gillette Adjustable. In a world of its own, at least in my experience. Two passes and I'm smooth enough to call it BBS but the irritation...

Seriously, the alum was a block of molten lava. And, I reopened the cut from two or three nights ago without even realizing it. It was just that fast when it happened. It's a good thing there is no 10 on this razor. It wouldn't get tried.

My final impression of this razor - I like it. Yeah, I know, a Soviet that works! Now, having said that I will NOT guarantee that if you get one it will work like this one. Remember that word "Soviet"? That pretty much negates any hope of consistency in any great amount. But.....I can honestly say I could use this in place of the Slim, adjusting for the aggression factor of course, and be perfectly happy. Now, whether or not the mechanics and finish will last like a Gillette....well that's question that only regular use over time would tell, so don't look for an answer anytime soon. Too many toys in the toy box here and all that.

Well, that's it for me in Decadent December and 2016! Hope you have a great night, enjoy seeing 2017 come in and I'll see you over on the new thread!

I had a great Decedent December. Used some fantastic razors, my favorite brush, and managed to rotate through all my soaps. I also managed to compare four DE razors with two different blades to decide which to keep. I had every intention of getting one more shave in for 2016, but after getting the kids to bed, this was how I rang in the new year. Happy New Years to Aunt Neal and the 30 Day Crew!

I thought I might add a few observations I made in last month's focus. The obvious observation is the head geometry. The Fatboy head is definitely taller than the other two. On the surface, the Slim and Black Beauty have the same geometry. Here is the photo (I will apologize ahead of time, as I don't have a macro lense):

    IMG_4690.JPG

When looking at the blade angle on dial setting one, all three razors look somewhat similar.

    Slim:

    Black Beauty:

When I moved the dial to position 9, though, more of a difference appears. The Fatboy and Slim both seem to hold the same angle, but the Black Beauty seems to flatten the blade out some. Admittedly, the difference is more noticeable in real life than these pictures.

    Fatboy:

    Slim:

    Black Beauty:
    IMG_4689.JPG

When using these razors, it did feel as if the Black Beauty got a bit more aggressive than the other two when the dial increased. This slight change in the blade angle would explain this.

Both the Slim and Black Beauty have a bit more blade exposure on 9 than the Fatboy.

All in all, I enjoyed all three razors. The Black Beauty tended to fall a little short of the other two. If this was a 1975 (birth year) razor I would definitely keep it, but I will likely look at passing this razor on to someone else. I could see keeping both the Slim and Fatboy, so I will still need to think about these two. I greatly like how both razors shave, so it is tough.

Nice comparison. The only Gillette Adjustable I have used is the Slim so good info. I would like to score a Fatboy at some point but my cheapness has kept me out of bidding in most cases.

Really interesting test. Since I have a '71 SA-109, I feel a little better about tomorrow morning, knowing in advance that the Russian steel will be looking for blood if I'm not on my game. I had planned to 9 it.

Jim, that's a very helpful comparison of three classic Gillette adjustibles. Nice job! :happy088:

Thank you all. I did enjoy this last month, and I did learn quite a bit. I don't think a guy could go wrong with any if these razors.
