Oh and I forgot to add that I have a TGN brush that was PIF'd to me with a knot that's perfect for travel.

    Hi.

I have an internal conflict I need to get off my chest. Even though I bought a nice Edwin Jagger travel set, I feel a little awkward about doing so. Why? Because I like to think of myself as a minimalist and only get something if it makes sense to get it. I take pride in making smart choices. In fact, one reason I started shaving with double edged blades was because I thought it was ridiculous for me to pay 10 times the amount for the fusion 5 blade systems. -Now I don't mind paying good money for something that will give me clear better performance/longevity/value. But aesthetics, perceived quality, etc. are funny things - they can slowly and quietly turn you into a slave to your possessions. (not to mention make you go broke at the same time)

But getting back the basic points: if the purpose of a travel kit is if this set gets lost or stolen, it's not the end of the world, then spending a lot of money on one (like I did) would sting for sure if I lost it. As well, the brush and razor are only shorter than the standard sizes by a little, so I'm not really economizing on space a great deal. Perhaps it is lazy to not throw your daily shaving stuff in a bag and run with that on trips? Anyway, I'm not sure if I have a conclusion to this - I just had get my thoughts out there. ...it is a nice set at the end of the day.

    Thanks,

    Will

I'm with Steve all the way on this one...and I do travel alot....But when I'm traveling, I enjoy the pleasure of a great shave so much, it becomes a priority...Sometimes grabbing a great shave is the best way to handle all the discomfort of traveling...I'm not willing to sacrifice my best shaves when travelling so I've picked up the pill bottles for my shaving brush and shave stick...a small screw on top plastic container for shave soap, and I use it as a mug aswell...And I've got travel cases for each razor...Now I take my 1912 and my Schick Hydro-magic...If I want I'll take my Micromatic too...3 small razor cases take up no room....I enjoy having options...:) All of this fits in a small leather shave bag....plus my tooth brush, paste, and whatever pills I need...and the bag fits in a corner or my suitcase...No probs...I think people are too concerned about super small shaving stuff for traveling....Its not like you have to carry it in your pocket....

Do you guys have any trouble with vintage safety razors in your carry on bags? I was thinking that the bag checkers may frown upon the lump of metal and sharp blades showing up on their X-Ray machine.

I usually only fly with carry on bags, so rarely have checked luggage. Are you forced to leave your good razor at home and fly with a plastic one? Or do you omit the blades and buy them when you land?

Must I leave my Gillette Rocket at home?

DE blades are not allowed on planes in the US. The razor will probably get through but no blade in it.

Well you actually will learn alot around here and save money on a per shave basis over carts...It's finding the right stuff(razor, blade, soap) and the hobby part that gets sooooo expensive!!! :)

My wife bought me an AOS travel kit with Sandalwood pre-oil, shaving cream, and after shave; along with a really cool little silvertip badger brush. We're planning a two week trip out of state and yes I've tested the kit a couple of times. This will be in my carry on and haven't yet selected the tool itself...probably will be my SH Mergress.

If your going to fly(I never fly myself) check if its ok to carry blades and such...The airplane "gestopo" may confiscate your razor if it's loaded with a blade:signs131:....I'm not positive how it works, but I'd double check the rules and make "ABSOLUTELY"sure what's what before I took any chances....:)

I have enough "acquisition syndromes" courtesy of my other passions and hobbies that I made it a point not to add another one when I got into wet shaving. Consequently, I own only one DE razor and one brush. For traveling, I keep a Sensor Excel cartridge razor in my travel bag along with a shave stick. I just throw my brush in the brush container that I bought from Em's and that's about all the prep I need to do when I take a trip. The Sensor Excel, when used with a good soap, provides an excellent shave and keeps me from having to worry about airline regulations. The higher cost of the cartridges is irrelevant since I only need to use them a couple of times a year.

Gadabout: you may have answered my question. Yes, BTW - I just bought an AOS travel kit with lotion, cream, a little Badger brush and after shave; I was thinking of packing my 'Excel for the two week trip to Juneau Alaska for a trip after reading about troubles with DE razors, all of this courtesy of our beloved TSA. No the Excel isn't my Mergress, but I know how to shave properly and it works just fine.

I usually don't use a DE on the road for many reasons.
My travel setup is a Sensor and any brushless product that I happen to lay my hands on:
KMF, Alba, even a travel size of the canned stuff.

I travel about 30-40 weeks per year. That is, I'm away from home for 30-40 weeks at a time. I don't "hop around" much so it's more like relocating than travel.

I have a complete travel set of everything (clothes, shoes, etc.). I live it 2 places at the same time.

It's not as bad as it sounds. Our kids are "mostly grown". The wife tend to join me if the location is interesting enough. If it's really good (good skiing, beaches etc.) the kids show up as well. :D

    So, my current shaving kit:
    Kit: Dopp Saddle leather
Razor: English Rocket in 30-40s Brass case.
    Brush: Rooney turnback
Soap: Cella (smells like snicker doodles) Valobra as backup.
Hair Brush: NOS 30s Ebony boar
    Aftershave: TOBS Shaving Shop
    Tooth brush & Paste
    Steel mirror

    Add one Rolls Traveler (always)
