I currently purchased an 81 super adjustable that was in great functional shape and had the handle and numbers repainted. I honestly feel more comfortable with how the safety bar is on these than merkur long 20c.
I use both of my birth year/quarter razors. Both of them have the (somewhat) rare Q1 date code. My birthday is in January and since Gillette apparently switched the 1971 code from Q to R early in the first quarter, I'm guessing that these are birth month razors as well. All of my long handled razors are at he top of my list of favorites; they seem to give more blade feedback.
I've never really thought about a birth year razor. I know some guys on the internet pipe forums get a kick out of owning &/or smoking their birth year pipe(s), but I've never seen the appeal to be honest. Though I could see getting a kick out of shaving with a razor my grandfather's birth year - 1915.
Absolutely gorgeous, I own several razors (just like the rest us) but just traded into my by,bq long handle black beauty and I agree, its now my all time fav.
I have a Slim birth year/quarter razor that I use regularly. I also have a birth year black handle Super Speed but it doesn't see near as much use.
Up until reading this post, it never occurred to me that my birth year razor is out there. Of the three DE's I'm aware of being my birth year (born in '78), there doesn't seem to be any I'm really interested in getting... maybe when they are a little more vintage the idea will appeal to me more.
I am in the process of trying to find one from my year of birth. I guess it's what is known as hurry up and wait.
My Gillette Flare Tip '65, is, accidentally, the best razor I have. Way better than any modern razor I've used.
Gorgeous, I had no idea how much more I would like my 69 than my new ones. I wish they would make them again, A "throw back" if you will.
Been back to DE shaving for a while, and I'm looking for my year of birth and quarter. Unfortunately this seems to be more difficult than anticipated, I'm after a Gillette but my birth year is 52, which seems to be a pretty sparse year for x1 razors... Patience will have to be my watch word I'm afraid, unless someone out there has one or point me in the right direction. Regards Eric.
Gillette Black Tips came in X1's. I got an X3 that I rather like. It's on the mild side though. I can even see a Black tip X1 on ebay this very moment for "$14.95 Buy it now" - lol. Disclaimer: not my ad so no idea of the condition.
Excellent!! As I live in the UK, how easy would it be to get it shipped over the pond, should it be ok? Been looking a while now so this maybe just right. I will try and find it. Thank you, much appreciated. And will get back to you.. Cheers
A 47 Gillette is hard to track down since they did not date code them until 1950. 1947 was the first year for the Super Speed. It was not notched, that's the tell. I am still on the look out. I do have a 1947 Rolls, but it is not shave worthy. I am also trying to find a Milord '47.
They are not that uncommon. If I were you I'd check the UK version of eBay first to see if you can pick one up closer to you. The Black Tip is actually a sort of 'special' version of the [colour]-tip razors as it was only, I think, made for 4 years.
I have been looking for a 1951 Gillette but can't find any of them one that was listed was junk for parts. The pictures they had posted were bad. That was a couple of weeks ago, no sale it went away.
I am still looking, really don't have a good idea on identifying one. Born 1947, not even going to worry about the quarter. I have a gold ball end tech, does not have the notches in the center support. This may be close. Any one have a suggestion? Dave
I have my birth year Super Speed which I do think shaves better than most modern razors...BUT!! My Dad's birth year razor is my best shaver...an Ever-Ready 'Shovelhead' from the 1920's....So therefore, my birth year razor is enjoying permanent retirement and my POP's birthyear razor gets more action than any razor I've got...lol
Been keeping an eye out daily Darktub, but 1951/2 Gillette seem to be few and far between over here on Ebay, it maybe that I have to shop in the US for a good example. But will need for sellers over there to put them worldwide to sell..
