You can find the '51 Black Tip Steel Super-Speeds in great condition, just stay vigilant....Good Luck...great razor...Yeah, the U.S. is the best market for those as they were Korean War razors...
How 'bout your Dad's birth year razor...I'll take my Pop's Birth Year razor over mine ANY day! Drop me a PM about this with your addy....I'm going stateside in a couple months and if I see one I'll send it to ya... and if you pick one up before then let me know aswell...
I can see at least four X1 date code, vintage razors on eBay here right now. Different models as well so you seem to have quite a lot to pick from http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...0.TRC0.Xgillette+x1&_nkw=gillette+x1&_sacat=0
None of the Gillette DE razor made in the early 70's interest me. The vast majority of my razors are from the 20's and 30's.
I have to agree. My DE is one I have had since I went in the service. It's gone thru many years of abandonment when I decided to grow a beard. Then it was away and forgotten when I decided to use wet shave electric razors (very bad idea) until I found DE blades again. It's been put away and brought back it's always given me the best shave. Too bad Gillette doesn't make them anymore.
Cheers Patrick, I must say I am on another shave forum, but the guys on here seem friendlier and may I suggest more helpful. Thanks for the link Darkbulb, the black tips are certainly what I'm looking for, cheers for going the extra mile mate. The X1 is now firmly set in my mind, it's now a must have.. So renew the search with more vigour to find a good one. What sort of money will I expect to pay in the US? Oh and thanks to you to Patrick Cheers Eric
Almost impossible to guess the cost as it will depend on the model and of course condition. A black tip in really good condition may be around $25-30 depending on how many people happen to be looking for one. I think I paid about $20 for my X3 black tip and it's in very nice condition and I ended up getting mine from Etsy I believe (www.etsy.com). Both sites are good to look in whenever you feel that purchase need....
Thanks again! Darkbulb, a.k.a "fountain of all knowledge" lol... Just registered on site thanks for link. Eric
The 20's and 30's models are great shavers, but you should try a Black Beauty if you haven't; they are nice razors, especially the long handle versions IMO.
2 years during the Korean War....there was a brass shortage because all brass was being used for the war effort...The Korean War was close enough to WWII that all the brass being used for shell casings made everyone manufacturing things that needed brass to be creative...including razors...So Gillette used Steel Handles and base-plates and a black plastic TTO knob...It's a wonderful razor....But as soon as the Korean War ended they went back to all brass...They made some Black Tips with Aluminum Handles also.
Ah yes you're right - only two years. I managed to get the X3 which is the all-steel one. I like it quite a bit - very smooth.
I have a slim and I could never get a good shave using it. It is just to mild. It is just a display piece.
I have a birth-year Slim and when I use it I have it somewhere between 7-9 and it gives a very smooth and close shave. Then again, we're all different I guess but I'm surprised that you find it too mild even at those settings. Also note that a Black Tip will most likely NOT feel more aggressive than a Slim at 9.
