    33.3% of the time, perhaps?

    (One divided by three?)

After using my R41 last night, I was sitting on the couch rubbing my face and was really unhappy with the quality of the shave, so I went back upstairs, lathering up again and did a shave with my Feather AC. Is that a bit crazy? Yup!

I almost bought a traditional straight razor but when I looked at all the time that needs to be sent with stropping and honing, I decided to go with the Feather Artist Club instead. The Feather gives you all the experience of the traditional but with none of the hassle.

Daily stropping a straight is nmt 1 minute. Honing would be estimated nmt 1 hour annually. I spend more time deciding what soap I’m gonna use.

I would respectfully disagree,, and yes I have both

The SR allows for an infinite combination of adjustments to fine tune the edge to the individual

I use a straigth 95% of the time, a kamisori 5% of the time and the shavette and DE 1%,..

I started with a shavette, but after like two weeks went to a straight, and it was a revelation, no blood, no irritation,...
But a straight has to be honed in a decent way, sharp and soft, and it needs to be kept dry, stropped,..

I spend 10 seconds every 2 weeks replacing the blade on my Feather, not to mention I don't have the time of honing and hundreds of dollars invested in stones.
Having said that do I want a vintage kamisori? Yup.

I can get equal results to your SR edge (the Aust) as with a DE based shavette. That said, they are not the same experience, and while the techniques are very similar, a real SR edge definitely has a softer feel and is more forgiving. More attack angle leeway on real SR as well. I definitely had to commit to shavette and master it just like Straights, also worth mentioning.

The debate shouldn't be about better or worse, but about the differences.

They are just different tools, each with their own sets of advantages and issues.

Straight razors are the ultimate adjustable follwed by shavettes in my opinion. Both allow a wide range of angles and aggressions. What makes straights more adjustable is you can fine tune the edge depending upon how you hone it, with what stones, pasted strops, how you strop and what you use to strop. You can try to find that perfect combination of smoothness and sharpness for your face.

Not a matter of better or worse. Sometimes I can be OCD, straights are good match for me. But I do enjoy shaving with a shavette too. I get similar results with both.

Alright, you guys talked me into it: I just ordered a Gold Dollar 800. I figure for $50 shave ready, I cant really go wrong.

OK, I think I will try using my Shavette for one month, everyday, in the evenings. I can only do one pass right now as my face stings too much to do another pass. Because a single pass with my Shavette still leaves a lot of stubble, I'll still need to do the DE in the morning, but maybe just 2 passes as I've already done one the night before. ---I'll see how that goes.

From what I gather through this thread thus far:
    • SR will generally take longer than a DE. Deal with it.
    • The quality can be comparable to a DE, if you get really good at it.
    • To start with a SR and then use a DE to finish the job sounds a bit complicated to me, but if it works, it works.
    • The maintenance of a SR to some, sound like a minor hassle, to others, a very tiny hassle and maybe just "part of the experience".
    • The main reason to switch from a DE to a SR is perhaps to conquer a rare skill and spend more "me" time (zen), ...and just because it's damn cool.

I use SE and DE razors during the week and straights on Saturday. I have been doing this for about a year now. A couple of years ago I tried shavettes. I could never get good results with a shavette. I could get blood, but that was not the result I wanted. On January 20 last year @Drygulch sent me two straights and a strop to try out. I used them for two weeks, and found that I could get a good shave with them. On February 4, an old friend gave me a vintage H. Böker & Co. 5/8 Extra Hollow Ground razor. I sent it off to @HolyRollah to be refurbished and honed. He did an excellent job on it. I got it back and started my Saturday shaves on March 4. I am now up to 11 straights that I rotate through. They are all vintage razors that I had honed except for two. I got a Gold Dollar 208 off of eBay that was shave ready for only about $10. I got a Luxor Pro notched shavette. I can get a good shave with it with no nicks or cuts. I still prefer my straights to any shavette.

Glen is Spot On..Feather Artist Type Razors are More or Less Pre Determined by the Factory in Terms of the Shaving Angle..Its a Factory Blade like DE Blades...I Dunno Why Both are Compared in the Same Breath..The Subject Causes a Heated Debate in Some Forums..I Know One Forum that Created a Separate Thread Dedicated to Shavettes for the Same Said Reason..:happy097:

They (AC razors) are shavettes another way. I actually started a daily shavette thread, they can have their own home that way. I don't feel like they belong on an SR thread. It's why I don't post my daily shavette to the @lindyhopper daily SR thread, shavettes are a different tool and experience. Even though I don't sense too much tension on TSD on this subject, I am all for keeping SR world pure.
