I don't know what to say about Mühle. Their soaps used to be terrible, and now, they are fantastic. A few years ago, I bought one of their Aloe soaps, and after just one shave, I ended up taking showers with it. Then, I received one as a gift, and it was wonderful. They must have been reformulated at some point, because now, they are excellent.
I am using the EJ Sea Buckhorn soap currently. The smell is a little flowery, but it is good soap. Very nice lather with good cushion from the blade. It also leaves your skin very soft. DRW
just an FYI if someone else hasn't mentioned it, sea buckthorne is also a natural remedy for (not sure on the spelling) rosatia... the red vainy outbreak around the nose so common amongst those of us of english/irish decent. cleared me up in short order.
I have the cream and the aftershave lotion, it smells a bit like mango - both my wife and I agree there (...rare...).
I have the cream soap and aftershave. I like the scent and the cream. Not a big fan of soaps in general. I tried to melt the soap in the microwave to put in another bowl. Do not try this.
I recently acquired the EJ seabuckthorn shave soap, a refill puck, because I didn't want to spend over $10 for it. First off, man is this a great soap. Up until the EJ soap, I've been using VDH and Col Conk. Those are good soaps but my goodness, the EJ blows them out of the water! I've had my best shaves with this soap. Still havent had any nicks or cuts with the soap, either. Not only that, with the EJ soap, I no longer get any razor burn, which I had been getting at times with the other soaps. As for the melting of the EJ shaving soap, I concur, I tried it, and the only the very bottom middle portion of the puck softened up. It was weird, so I stopped doing it. I have it in a ceramic bowl in a plastic ziplock bag. EJ seabuckthorn shave soap was my first venture into decent, middle of the road soaps, and it has made all the difference.
The EJ soaps are being described as rebranded Muehle soaps, but the Muehle soaps themselves are actually made by Haslinger in Vienna. The 'Sea Buckthorn' is the Haslinger 'Meersalgen'. I've always liked the scent and the performance, but a puck disappears very quickly as it isn't a milled soap. The Haslinger 'Honig' is a scent worth trying too - I can't think of another honey scented soap at all. Haslinger branded soaps are available at Shavemac, and probably some other places but that's where I have bought them. Chris
EJ Sea Buckhorn I like the EJ Sea Buckhorn & Sandlewood scents the best. These soaps provide a nice cushion and lather very well. DRW
anyone know of an alternative soap/cream and/or aftershave with the Sea Buckthorn scent? i used a sample today and it's AMAZING, but like others have said, a tad pricey. cheapest i've seen for the aftershave is $28/bottle. :shocked003 edit * i see other describing it as MANGO, and i can understand that. now to look for a MANGO aftershave, i quite enjoyed it.
I knew it, Muhle and Haslinger look too familiar even on picture. The best way to describe the sea buckthorn scent is like those hotel soaps you get for free in the bathroom, but the scent is much better and cleaner, and it does not feel cheap or overpowering.
It's hard to describe but I'd say it's somewhat lemony and peachy but that's probably not accurate. It's an incredibly good and non overpowering smell though, I will definitely be buying more.
Tried the Sea Buckthorn today, great scent, great soap! :happy088 I waited too long to try this rooty tooty fresh and fruity little gem.
I have been in quite a few discussions on another board re the scent as well as trying to figure it out with a group of my son's friends who are perfume makers. And we still can't figure it out. Most say it's like a melon, apple, etc. I say it's a mixture of cantaloupe and apple. I also asked Mama Bears if they could produce a balm/splash and she was not encouraging. Apparently Sea Buckthorn has little if any scent so whatever is in the EJ/Muhle is a closely guarded secret. As an aside, I have asked Sue at Honeybee soaps if she could identify the scent. I have both the cream and aftershave balm and the balm is my favorite, by far.
Well that is discouraging, I was going to talk to JoAnna about adding the scent to the store, and that explains why I couldn't find any Sea Buckthorn FO online.
I love the scent and especially like the AS balm... But the soap doesn't get more than an "okay" rating from me.
When I use my puck I am reminded of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit Gum. I like the scent and I think the soap works well. I will buy more of it and the cream and the balm and anything else that has the same scent.
