I just read over on TSR that you are considering rounding off the safety bar because of two reviewer's comments. I'm not famous (in shaving circles, anyway) but if the safety bar on any razor is touching your face, your technique could use some improvement. I also don't trust anyone that reviews a product the very first time they use it. If it can be done without distorting your vision of this razor, consider it. But please bear in mind that we are purchasing your razor and funding your vision, not a razor designed by committee.
I have to agree with the above. I mainly use SE razors, but every now and then go back to my EJ89. I always find that with the first few strokes, the bar and the corners dig into my cheeks until I remember the angle.
Thanks for your comments, guys. I shave that way as well, but there's something to it if two people reach the same conclusion. I'm just exploring the option and I'll show you a model of it before I ever commit. When I say rounding, I don't mean a big, soft curve. We're talking about just knocking off the sharp part with a radius of less than 0.5mm. While it's my vision, most of all I want you to have a great shaving tool. And if this very small change helps that, then I think it's worth investigating.
That's thinner than the thickness of a standard graphite automatic pencil lead. You don't need to post pictures of that. I was thinking it would be a bit more radical of a change. It would also make it slightly more resistant to dings and nicks. I was worried any changes would visibly change the look of the razor. Shane, now that the Kickstarter is funded, what are your plans beyond this Kickstarter project? Are you just going to make this batch and call it quits, or what?
Not if I can help it! Of course the scale of future endeavors depends on the funding amount we receive. It looks like we'll probably wind up somewhere around $23-25k which is just enough to get rolling. What will happen is I'll take all the Kickstarter funds and use it on inventory. The leftovers will be sold on a preorder system on my website. From there I have many ideas for the future of Blackland. We'll almost certainly see a Blackbird open comb. I've also begun the early stages of a concept that I think will be unique if I can sort it out. PM me if you want to hear about it.
TSE released a new video showing his shave with the Blackbird. I found it funny that, just like Darkbulb, he said something along the lines of "It shaves differently, but I can't explain why." Positive review all around. Definitely one to watch.
an open comb Blackbird sounds very interesting. would that be available as a head only or as a complete razor? sounds interesting. looking forward to hearing about your new concepts.
Still waiting on that PM Shane. Just out of curiosity, why did you decide to go with an Edwin Jagger/progress style head over the more traditional Gillette style, like most other razor makers have done?
It's a way off, but I don't see why it shouldn't be available as both a head and a full razor. I've been busy and it's a long message! Haven't forgotten you. Basically just came down to personal preference. No interesting reason. Could have gone a million different ways with it, but this is what popped out.
I'm normally not a box-person but I have to say that the box Shane came up with extremely nice. It's much more compact than I think it comes across in pictures and it's heavy. Very solid.
Glad you like it. That's an early one. If I do decide to offer them, there will be laser engraving on the inside as well. Most likely depicting the model name and year.
Is the third picture B&W or a different stain? Seems like a black walnut type stain would fit more with your theme. Of course ebonized lacquer would be DDG...
It's black and white. Darkbulb is artsy . The first photo is probably the best representation of the color.
New reward tier today. Been asked by a few people if I would offer the handles separately so today I'm doing just that. $55 and available in 70mm and 101mm lengths and both finishes. Need to build momentum back so if any of you would be so inclined to share my project, I'd be grateful.
