There is no extra length when installed on a Blackbird head. It sits perfectly flush. The box CNC route is being updated for the boxes with an extra handle to accommodate the new dimensions so that everything fits precisely.

Got our razor/brush stands in! Solid cherry wood with an acrylic brush hook. Made in the US. These turned out absolutely gorgeous and I am thrilled. Up for sale on the website now. We only have a few of these in and I suspect they'll be gone before too long. Kickstarter backers can use the coupons on the item page to save on shipping and have the stand come with their razor(s).

Are there any plans to produce a dual comb version of this razor? She's a beauty by the way. Really like the black handle/top cap with the stainless base plate

Yes. There will be an OC Blackbird coming down the road if things go well with the standard Blackbird. If they fly off the shelves, OC comes sooner. Best case scenario: sometime in 2016.

Edit: I misread the question. Dual comb may happen, but it's less certain than open comb.

Thanks for the compliment! It doesn't sound like you're ready to purchase quite yet, but if you ever do, just shoot me an email and I can set you up with the color combination you'd like. The only options currently on the website are all black or all stainless, but that's not fully representative of the possibilities.

You're absolutely correct. I'm relatively new to DE shaving, and I'm not sure of what I like in a razor so to speak. Also, will you be offering different options in blade gap? I know it's a lot of questions from a window shopper, but for me it's a significant investment, and one I'd prefer to only make once

Different base plates to yield multiple aggressiveness levels is another thing that might come up in the future, but currently isn't planned. My only focus right now is making one amazing razor and getting those out in a timely fashion. Once the standard Blackbird is well established and my operation is in a good place, the sky is the limit to all the design options I can do. I'm really looking forward to those fun ideas, but first things first.

As one of your kickstarter backers I am really looking forward to an amazing razor. That stand looks great as well. I'm hoping to put it to the test before Christmas wink wink...

Christmas is looking likely so far, but I still can't promise it. I can promise, however, that you're going to get an awesome razor regardless!

I understand completely. Best of luck, although judging by the look and quality of the razor you aren't gonna need it.

As someone who just bought one of those stands, you're killing me with add-on sales. A razor, yeah, sure. Extra different size handle...maybe. Box for both? Okay. It will look good and will provide a storage space for the extra handle. Matching brush and razor stand? Nope. I don't need one...oh, only a few in stock? Maybe I should get one. It might be collectable. :D

Haha sorry! I have a lot of fun designing things so I made maybe a few too many items. The good news is that the stand should be the last add on. The brush has been sidelined for a while until I either get better at casting or find a new production method.

Oh and bringing the box back was your idea so I don't feel bad about that one. :D

Now you blame me for the box? Okay. I can live with that. :D

Alright guys I finally have a good update! Sorry for the slow updates. Basically it's been idle time waiting for machining to actually begin. The bulk of the process is for them to set up tooling and program machines and that makes for no news to share. That has been been finished and the parts run has begun!

I got this photo last night. The part is being shipped to me for my approval and I'll have it Monday. It's important to note the deburring was done by hand on this piece so some of the edges are a tad rougher than the full run will be. This is a tester to ensure it meets my standards. When I get the part I'll take my own photos and post a Kickstarter update.

The machining on this piece is absolutely incredible! The machining process changed a bit and the result is astounding. I used to think the old finish was really good. Now it looks like garbage compared to the new. The new piece has a gorgeous and consistent checkered pattern that is nearly perfect. It's hard for me to capture it in photos, but I did my best. Just published an update for backers. Here is the link for those of you who didn't back the campaign, but still want updates: https://www.kickstarter.com/project...-stainless-steel-safety-razor-0/posts/1410315

Look at the consistency of the machining pattern, especially above the center hole.

This is a comparison between new(left) and old(right). The areas around the combs and on the body show the difference well. It is vastly superior.

I'm so damn pleased with this hunk of metal. Can't wait for the others. Oh and the machinists are working on a video for me. When I get that I'll pass it along to you!

In the update, you said that the oxide coated razors will take about a week longer, so does that mean those of us who opted for raw stainless get ours a week sooner than everyone else? :)

Nope! The raw stainless version isn't really raw. They get passivated. The black oxide ones get passivated and then hit with the black oxide from the same people. It takes roughly the same amount of time. Sorry!

Does that mean that the raw gets patina like the black?

No. The process might slightly darken the raw stainless, but it's a process which would have occurred fairly quickly naturally. This just makes sure there are no impurities on the surface of the metal left by the machining process, and then controls the level of oxidation.

If the Pils razor had been subjected to passivism before they sold the first batch, there wouldn't have been so many people upset that their very expensive stainless razors were rusting. They fixed that issue, but it cost them sales and customers. I gather Shane doesn't want to follow in their footsteps.

Here's more info on stainless. A bit more technical this time:

High oxidation-resistance in air at ambient temperature is normally achieved with additions of a minimum of 13% (by weight) chromium, and up to 26% is used for harsh environments.[12] The chromium forms a passivation layer of chromium(III) oxide (Cr2O3) when exposed to oxygen. The layer is too thin to be visible, and the metal remains lustrous. The layer is impervious to water and air, protecting the metal beneath. Also, this layer quickly reforms when the surface is scratched.
