In order of preference, badger, synthetic and then boar. Most of all of my badgers are finest grade either TGN or Shavemac though I do have other knots as well. In general I use soaps and face lather. Have had no real issues lathering any soap with the badgers.
Yes my jaw drops open like a mailbox when I see the prices they command! I have a $50 silvertip which is a decent little brush but that is about as high as I would spend on a brush for sure. I rather sink a few hunded in a razor than a brush. I have found alot of $15 brushes as sufficient for the use they were intended. But that is the great thing in this addiction.............to each their own.
It's difficult to pick a favorite. I like each of them for what they are--and not for what they aren't.
My favorite brush is a WD Silvertip that was less then $50 shipped. It's set deep and has good backbone and is still very soft on my face. It works for bowl or face lathering quite well. I tend to use mostly creams and it works great.
That's tough. I think I reach for my boar most often even over my nice silvertip and plisson fiber synthetics.
I agree with Primo. I like Boar, Badger, and Synthetic equally. I focus on the handle rather than the bristles when selecting a SOTD brush.
Synthetic for me. They make a good lather and they feel great on my face. Thats all I really want from a brush.
Boar, especially with harder soaps, a.k.a. MWF and Tabac, although horse and Tabac make a great lather too. I'm getting more attached to my horse brush but I prefer the 35/65 mane to tail brush...more scritch and I prefer that in a brush.
