Favorite handle replacement for the Gillette New

I'm thinking about getting the head of my Gillette New replated in bright nickel or rhodium. I've read that replacing the standard bar handle on my 1934 Gillette New LC might be something that I would want to consider. I've done several searches on the Forums but haven't turned up much. Please feel free to chime in with suggestions.

Keep it original. That is my suggestion.

Since you're replating in a non-stock finish I presume that retaining collectors' status is less important than what works. On my Short Comb my common bar handle is so light (21g) that there's no way to grip the razor at its balance point, it's that head heavy (whereas my New Improved is perfectly balanced) . If I were going to replate my SC I wouldn't hesitate to replace the handle with a heavier one that improves balance and looks classy.

Not mine, unfortunately,.. mine has a ball end handle.

Well then replate in the original finish as well.

How much does the ball handle weigh? The common bar handle sucks, making the razor 21g lighter than the New Improved, with balance like a wood handled hammer.

Well, when the handle failed I went with this ...

I even chamfered the end to fit properly to the base plate. I think it looks classy.

The Durham Dubarry at 43g weighs twice what the CBH does and gives the razor perfect balance (I just tried it on). A good 80-85mm titanium handle would probably also work well.

Star handle (40g) is not fancy but also works nicely.

Or you can leave it original. Works really good that way.

I use my Star handle on my Star razor head, which is a very nice shaver!

Those titanium things do nothing for me.

We're blue skying here for the OP. He asked for reasons why one might consider changing handles and I offered a pretty clear reason, Improved balance.

That titanium , the Stork classic, is the only one I care for, looks quite fetching in brass but would be awfully heavy for the New head.

Yeah that Star handle works great on the Star head. Go figure. Too bad unlike ASR Gillette stuck those who couldn't afford the Big Boy or Deluxe sets with such badly mismatched handles. They are anything but perfect

I know Fuzzy is ideologically opposed to tinkering, as you may be (I have no idea), that's fine. The OP seems open minded enough and I see no issues with trying to improve an already good razor unless it's the razor equivalent of a garage queen, or really lives in a den which isn't your bathroom.

Fair point, in which case I would agree on the Star, or the Durham Duplex, which are both solid handles, instead of hollow. But they are still vintage, and I would hemorrhage or something if I recommended a non-vintage handle! :p :shocked003:

You could use just about anything - even ironwood. Just add a 10/32 insert, and viola, you have a New handle :)

Cool idea, but to me, the killer is that you could never be REALLY sure that the curve would be the right way for the shave - and then you'd flip the thing over to use the other side. Symmetry is a good thing on something double sided.

That's still some serious thought and effort. Who made that one?
