Yes! Technique Trumps Tools is good, too. Advice is what you pay for it. In this case, free. Finding what works for you through experimentation, trial, and hopefully few errors. I like the determination of skipping the training wheels and desiring a good shave soon as possible. So from your side of the computer screen eliminate the negatives, accentuate the positives.

Thanks Jim, sure didn't look it when I got it. Amazing what a little scrubbing can do.

The endless gap. Maybe I should patent it for a "real" Neal razor.

The Omega 98 is a beast with soaps. Nothing intimidates it, so it's an excellent choice to go to soap with.

I added water 6x before shaving. I do not understand how it got drier. Does it dry out like overworking meringue? I only worked it for 30-45 seconds for each addition of water because I heard the AOS brush that comes with the kit was poor so I figured I would just work it longer. There were no visible bubbles. It was all very fine bubbles.

I did like that it got stiffer. Is that a sign that it is more protective or just drier? My thinking was that if it was stiff it would protect better. Is this true?

It's one of the reasons I bought it. I want to use both creams and soaps.

What a day. My littlest stayed up all night last night bringing forth her meals from the last few days, so I beat my alarm clock like a drum this morning. By the time I dragged out of bed and went to shave before work, I was up against the clock. No worries, right? Because SE focus has been going smoothly, I can knock it out and walk out the door looking like I hadn't been up all night. To save more time, I went with Clubman-In-A-Can and the Schick G1. What can go wrong with a G1? Well, let me tell you; when you get in a hurry and technique suffers, lots can go wrong. To sum it up, the lather was thin (smelled good though), I knicked myself for the first time ever with the razor (and I am still not sure how I did it), and walked out the door feeling like I had barely shaved.

Great morning at church, though, so I think things are getting better. And then I get the evening off, so FOOTBALL right? And homemade buffalo wings? Bonanza! Stay up and watch the game with the family, only to watch our team's slow and painful decline through the second half, and then the decimation of their morale in overtime.

Oh well, new shaves tomorrow. New blade, good brush, good soap. Not blaming the blade or the soap (obviously fell down on technique as I have successfully used this combo before in a pinch). But a new blade and a luxurious soap always make me feel better. I am making sure to get up early so I can shave properly.

    Fatboy February!!!!!

    February 5
    Razor - 1959 (E4) Gillette Fatboy (9)
    Blade - [IMG] (2)
Soap - Route 66 Sweeney Todd
    Brush - BoS Omega 10066
    Post - Alum

Crank up the Fatboy to 9 and here we go. The goal is BBS in two passes with some touch up allowed, just nothing resembling even a half pass. The Voskhod delivered near-BBS on 3 last night in the Fattie. So here we go.

Lather on the Omega was better than average. I am discovering, though, that after using the Semogue the Omega just seems to take a bit longer to load and to face lather. Maybe it's just an illusion of sorts, but I'm digging the Semogue over the Omega - barely. That could change. Both are excellent brushes so it's splitting hairs at this point. (pun was just hanging there waiting, so sue me).

First pass was completely smooth. At 9. Excellent feel and pass on the blade. Second pass equally smooth and left only a couple of minor touch ups. Yep, the baby showed up. So far it's living up to @Bama Samurai calling it a BBS machine on 9. That's two. Gillette Indian 7 o'clock and the Voskhod. Tomorrow night I'll throw in the Feather for two shaves, 3 and 9, and see if it scores again. Still have the GSB and Sharp Star on deck after that and I'm waiting for any other suggestions.

Super Bowl is done. Can't say I'm happy with the result, can't say I'm unhappy. Honestly, I'm more of a hockey and baseball guy. Hope you all had a great day and that your Monday starts the week on the right note for you tomorrow!

I feel your pain as far as football goes. My new blade went in this morning, so tomorrow is good. Hope your littlest feels better. I'll be up at 0545. Have a happy shave my friend.

It's true, generally. You really just have to play with your soap until you arrive at the mix you like. Lather building is a separate skill from shaving, requiring its own practice.

    If a soap can't be lathered with a 98 it's bad soap.

    PickledNorthern Fabulous, the unicorn

I guess what I look for is gloop. Lather that will form a peak, but not hold it very long. Like melting soft serve ice cream. I also like it a little wetter than some, but wet is where you get your slick from.

Tomorrow, maybe do the exact same thing, only start with a third more cream and see what happens.

Your brush is just fine, btw. It may feel a bit prickly on the face, and may be a bit floppy for really digging into a soap, but it isn't like a weak link in what you are doing here. What is it, an AOS pure?
