Good report and glad you are having some success. I am not sure I buy the "drag" issue here. Sorry, I just don't see it. Keep your strokes smooth and light and that shouldn't be an issue.

Ok, enough of the bathroom humor. Lol! Here it is for my new acronym. It will be known as IBSS which stands for in-betweener smooth shave. It is between a DFS and BBS. Now there will be no confusion and no more shenanigans! Lol!

When I took the knot that fell apart on my vdh it had a foam packing peanut in it.

I just changed the acronym to IBSS which is in-betweener smooth shave that is in between a DFS and BBS.

Sounds like some good progress. To me, lather shouldn't be too cushiony, as that is often a sign it isn't hydrated well. Lather that is too dry isn't slick. I shoot for a fairly runny lather that has lots of shine to it. To me, the idea of cushion is a bit over blown. Slickness is what helps more than anything. I have a hard time (not impossible @wchnu, as I can drive a stick) getting Williams to hold a stable lather, but it is slick and always works for me, even if the lather has dissipated as I shave. I would also continue working on riding the cap, as drag often implies too steep an angle with the blade.

I know. However, I am playing bachelor for another week, so there is still time for me to fall off the no shopping wagon. ;)

Congrats on your progress. I found this video to be very helpful as I was learning to wet shave. It clued me in to what a nice lather looks like, as well as the use of proper angle, short strokes and no pressure. Start the video at 2:00 to see how he uses the razor to gently wipe the lather from his face.

In any thread that isn't this one maybe. In this thread, a tangent on irritable bowel syndrome would be right at home. ;)

Face Mapping? Have you considered which way your beard grows?

I don't often give the nitty gritty details. Here's mine; WTG means first pass is North to South on my cheeks, but South to North on my neck. I tend to follow that with an ATG 2nd pass - Opposite directions from first pass. Many times I do a 3rd pass going from ears & meeting at my chin, under jaw line is where the Gillette Slide happens. If I say I'm doing clean up, I'm relathering and chin buffing (short strokes going around the corners) and/or trying to get that pesky lower neck stubble.

If you are using the same razor & blades but change soaps, that's close enough. That Proraso/Cremo combo is good stuff and you may not notice much difference switching to Stirling. Lather only smooths out the shave. Keep using the Fat Boy and developing your technique. Rule or Focus, the exercise is to improve your results.

I don't often claim a BBS, but DFS+ happens often. I'm all in on IBSS!

Hey Moose sounds like a great start and a great shave.
The drag you are having and what I am experience are different. I have a fatboy and other Gillette razors, never had the issue I am having now.
I am using a newly designed razor from a company that tries to be cutting edge. The razor is a version 2 hence V2, version 1 was not liked much. I like to try the new stuff even though it may not work for me.
Sounds like from what you describe you may be a little heavy handed, or need a new blade, been there done that. Give yourself some time and you will get better and better shaves.

Me, I'm working on a possible goofy issue with a new razor cap.

    Very nice write up.
