I have several Filly’s in my den and love them all. One that I have may not be rare, but uncommon. A early #13 J.M.P. that has the origin country stamped, not forged on the front field in native language, not on the rear where they are usually. 13’s, to my understanding were a model that were made for export. Pictures from years ago when I scored it from a retired barber before I restored it
With the arrival of a basket case 13, I now can fill the box. A couple really caught my attention for different reasons. My first “14” was this one without gold wash on the blade face. Pretty sure that is how it was sold, as you can see the retailer “El Fauno,” the address in Argentina, and maybe a Lot # (22-75). I was able to snag 2 of the early Medallon Taurino 14’s... Capote and Rejoneo. Love the little differences... Capote has the lyre while the Rejoneo has the “JMP” next to the scene. The scales are some of my favorites, especially the Bailaora dancer. Neither blade has the Made in Spain, but the Rejoneo has this Spanish municipality on the back. Fun blades Tom
I’m pretty sure Jamie has this blade in Mint condition, with box and paperwork, but I still figured I would share. I think this is my earliest Doble Temple Filly. The scales are solid, and it’s one of the heavier Filarmonica’s I have held. Add JMP’s initials to the center of the blade face... and here you go. This one stands out for me. Tom
Inspired by this thread I shaved with my #13 today. It came with the cheap flimsy scales, I just could not abide with such lightweight scales plus I did not like the way the look. Kevin, @HolyRollah put some some new shoes on this girl for me.
Consider me for any of your extra old, vintage #14 disposal needs. Here are my 2 Filarmonica #13s, a Doble Temple I’ve had since 2012 and a Novodur picked up last year:
I like to think of myself as a caring, thoughtful person and no one else had yet volunteered for such duty. It’s a slightly dignified step above outright begging, just so we’re clear.
Interested to see if you think that razor originally had a design on the blade face. Looks like a pretty early 14. Great score!
It is the same as yours. It translates or implies "The Faun", half man half goat, a Satyr. A Greek, and Roman mythological character. I'm curious to know what the numbers mean.
I don't own one, but I would like a 14 Novodur. Unfortunately, the asking prices on EBay are ridiculous!
Hey Tom, I also have a Gen 1 DT 14 that feels heavy. This razor just feels heavier for some reason, like you said. The wash is almost gone on this one, and it has the lyre rather than the JMP in the seal. I don’t know if the blade is a little longer, the grind a little heavier or what, but it also seems a little stiffer though it’s still a singer. @Trigger the fancy Gen 2 razors like a Sub Cero or Novodur will bring the bucks if they present as new and have the box, in the neighborhood of $400 on eBay/Etsy, and they’ve been close to that number for some years. The prices have risen maybe $25 in several years. The best places to find them a few bucks cheaper are the forum BSTs, but that may take a while and the discount isn’t huge. They’re big (many close to 8/8), desirable razors that shave well and I’ve never seen one badly ground.
I purchased a NOS 7/8 Henckels Friodur Square Pt for $89 + shipping on EBay last year and it was shave ready. I also bought Wostenholm a,15/16 near wedge square pt for 145 dollars and it was also shave ready. As far as I am concerned, the prices on Filis are still outrageous. They shouldn't be more than 120 dollars.
