Way to go. I am only 2-1/2 months in. My first two weeks were pretty much controlled terror if I am being honest.

As all have suggested a bit firmer grip and more consistent pressure will help the skipping. One other factor I found is the angle. A bit more or a bit less depending on my direction helps too.

The great thing on. Straight is it is instantly adjustable.

Please stick with it for a full month. You will not regret it.

So you think I should keep using the Genco and not the Cattaraugus? I just grabbed one....didn't think about the characteristics of them!

Whaaaat?????? You haven't tried a straight yet??? If you are wondering if they might "work for you", then you know the answer.
Time to give one a try.

With enough practice they will work for anyone. I started earlier this year and found the learning curve to be more harsh than for SEs and Injectors but one that can be overcome with enough determination and patience - even when your face ends up looking like it lost a fight with a cat as mine did more than once. :D

Perry, I just saw the thread. Congratulations on your first SR shave!

There's already great advice given here, so I don't have much to add. Take your time, concentrate on the shave, put any fears of the blade aside and your skills will improve. It took me almost 30 shaves before I felt I was proficient enough to even dare call myself an SR shaver.

SR shaving is enjoyable and it's cool to shave the way it was done by our ancestors! Keep at it!

I had two, but I picked the one, that if I boogered it up, it would matter as much. I stuck with that razor for one month. Yes, it was hard not to grab the other razor for comparison, but it was well worth the effort IMO. Combining a 30 day focus and straight shaving at the same time ended up being great fun:)

Just a quick thank you to all who have responded. I'm planning the start of my journey into straights, and threads like this answer questions before I even have them!

No, I talked my wife into letting me shop for my own birthday presents this year, so it's looking like February...

The Catt has a more user friendly tip, but the Genco is better balanced. You might do one round with the Catt and see which seems easier to maneuver around your face. That Genco is one of my favorites to use, it is just balanced well and shaves great. The Catt gave me a great shave, but wasn't quite as nice in the hand.

Shaved again today with the Genco. Did two passes on my cheeks, both WTG. I did a couple of strokes on my upper lip and tried a little bit of my chin. I got one small cut just below my right jawline.

The whole experience is uncomfortable! The shaving and the feel of the razor isn't smooth. When I pick up the injector to finish off it feels completely different. The injector is so smooth and effortless. But, I have to remind myself that this is only my second shave!

I think my angle is too steep sometimes - too parallel to my face. I need to arc it out some.

There is little to no irritation and my cheeks are nice and smooth. The cut on my jaw was disappointing, but I know those will come with the learning curve.

The first few shaves are the hardest due to nervousness. You hand will tremble some which leads to cuts. Just go as far as your confident and then stop. Start with a shallow as angle as possible and slowly increase it until you find the right angle for you.

I recommend learning with both hands, with one hand it was really hard to maintain a proper angle. Try practicing with a shavette do develop muscle memory.

You are off to a good start.

I like that recommendation, as I use both hands in various activities.
