Somebody here told me that mine is an older version of this razor and more aggressive. They tamed it with later versions. More of the blade is exposed with this one.
Yep standard Gen 1. I actually fine mine smoother than the Gen 2. I do have some difficult areas on my neck were the hair is tough and the skin is more sensitive. I think more efficient razors work better for me because I can get close with less passes/effort. So there seems to be less irritation. Everyone's skin, hair and technique is different so it is definitely a case of "your mileage may very".
Featherweight shave is VERY pleasant! Theo is back to watching me shave. Razor - GEM Featherweight (early version) Blade - GEM Personna SS 6th shave Pre-shave - TOBS Herbal Gel (used up and now deep sixxed! I am not getting more.) Soap - MWF Brush - Simpson #46 Berkeley Post - Thayers Toner "Lavender" Finishing touch - Proraso Balm & AS It was another very pleasant shave with the Featherweight. This is now one of my favs. 2-pass shave with no cleanup. WTG & ATG and the alum bar was silent. I can shave quickly with this razor now with no problems. No cuts, nicks, or errors. I also enclose a pic of me lathered for my second pass. Heading to the senior center for a guitar jam with friends. I may run to the italian restaurant afterwards. I need my fix! I hope all have a pleasant day!
I am new to this razor since June and I LOVE it. I have a lovely Gem Micromatic Shaves like a dream. This one's a "looker", but doesn't shave my face quite as well.
Gem Micromatic OC are excellent razors that came in 2 variant models the bump-less 1930-32 and when they introduced the double edge Gem blade the Gem regular Micromatic OC 1932-41. Micromatic razor are built to last and where well engineered with the rack & pinion TTO. Gem where like 3-4 years ahead of Gillette in the TTO market. @Primotenore I believe you have the Gem MMOC bump- less model. Have some great shaves!
Razor - GEM Featherweight Blade - GEM Personna SS (1) Pre-shave - Proraso White Soap - TOBS "Rose" Brush - Perfecto brush that I brought back from the almost dead. It has stopped shedding Post-shave - Thayers "Rose Petal" Toner with witch hazel & Proraso balm AS - Pinaud Clubman "Vanilla" (not in photo)
Thank you so much @Ron R ! Using your instructions, I was able to remove the aluminum spine from a modern GEM blade. I plan on using it as a shim in a bumpless MMOC.
That is a reference to Fuzzy(Wchnu) from across the street at TOST3.com . That is the forum dedicated to single edge razors only.
Every once in a while I come across a nugget of information that is interesting to folks who collect and use ASR razors like myself, these are Star & Gem razors of the ASR family of company's. These might fall under the Kampfe brothers brothers 1914 patent or Gem 1912 Patents that Star and Gem made proto types from similar razors to the 1914 LLC ER with out the top caps? They are very rare and pop up every once in a while + there is very little information on them in catalogues or online sources. Some folks call them tester razors or proto types but they are usable razors minus top cap. Here are some photo's courtesy of a member on the B&B forum. Have some great shaves!
Nice rare Star razor Greg, I like the advertising on the box. I have a star bar #4 lather catche and it is one of the best razors of many. Thanks for sharing.
