From self-taught back to Dad training My son decided to start shaving on his own with minimum instruction. Now that I am taking this as a hobby I am hoping to reclaim some space bonding in the learning together and training DE techniques.
Let him experiment with brushes: especially a nice brush with a strong, massaging feel to it; just that dynamic got my kid saying "Oh wow." My son also became curious because of the enthusiasm I had from my first few close shaves: after a nice shave, let him feel your face--that will get him curious on how you got so smooth. Eh--I just flat-out asked him: he said one of the reasons he got into it was also that not too many of his peers were shaving like that. So I guess you could point out the "rugged individual" aspect--although we all know it has as much to do with pampering as it does anything else. lol Hope this helps.
Actually, that's not been my experience at all. Plus, if you watch all his videos carefully, it takes him about the same time. In the lathering video, he times it from the moment he starts building lather to the moment the lather is ready, either in the bowl or on the face. When he demonstrates shaving technique, once he builds the lather in a bowl, he recommends working it into your beard with the brush for at least a minute. You really need to count the time from when you start building lather to the time your beard is properly lathered. It works out about the same for him. I find face lathering actually faster and a lot more enjoyable.
The Merkur HD is a fantastic razor. I would also agree that the Gillette super speeds & flair tips would make great shavers too. As for brushes I am a little biased towards Semogue, the 1305 would be a good starter brush. There badgers are very good value also. Body shop cream is a great shaving product as well. Good on ya for pointing the wee fella in the right direction.:happy088 Oh....I recommend the Astra super platinums as a decent blade.
My recommendations are: Merkur 23 or 38 closed comb. The difference ist the handle diameter and weight Do not use the Merkur blade which is included. Start with Derby or Astra (my favorite) Take a shaving cream, it's easyer to leaher up. I would prefer a bader brush. Maybe a travel saple like this gifts under $50, available in different scents will be the best. Show him how to shave, share your stuff at the beginning. My son startet his shaving career age of 4 helping my to leather up and "shaved" with the backside of a Mach3 and a safty razor(without blade). Now he is 8 years old an said "When I'm old enough, I will shave like you" My other son (3 y.) is not so interestet in shaving but in making tons of foam.
My boys started about the same age. I used to lather them up with Old Spice soap and an Old Spice brush. Two are wet shavers now and I just sent the eldest an Old Spice shaving mug I picked up for $3 on ebay. He still remembers those mornings of lathering up and shaving (sans blade).
