The Feather popular is I guess OK, but to me it's too lite. When using it I find myself applying too much pressure and if paired with a feather blade, it guarantees me a total blood bath. Now the Red tip, IMHO is the best Super speed ever produced. Perfect weight, perfect aggression. It's one of the few Gillettes in my rotation that I can count on to give a great shave consistently.
Thanks. That work was done by Razor Emporium over in Phoenix, AZ. They are currently doing up one more Red Tip for me, in Nickel.
Hmm, I only now really read huck's posts here and here pertaining to his replating experience with the same vendor. Worrying. And makes me wonder how my second Red Tip and the Fatboy I have sent them will turn out to be. I shall report back, with pictures of course.
It's on the aggressive side of things. Not so much because of the weight but because of the blade gap. I like the Red Tip and get good shaves from it. I don't use it very often though. The feeling of the overly exposed blade grazing my neck is something I just can't get used to. What's funny about these razors is that when people buy them the prices they go for depend on how intact the red paint is.
Intriguing, isn't it? Makes one wonder how much the amount of red paint must be affecting the shave quality... Of course, it does look nicer with a full coat of paint, I am the first one to admit it (or why else would I have 2 of them fully refurbished - maybe because I like it shiny) but, honestly, they perform still at the same great level with just a good bubble scrubb having been done to them. Each of us to our own preferences and, in my case, the Red Tip gives me some of the very best shaves because I get less irritation on the neck from it compared to others and it still cleans that part of shaving territory up very nicely. I just love mine! (do i sound like a broken record?)
There are new TTO razors...we have quite a few Weishi's Ming-Shi's and Parkers being used around the Den...But don't think for a minute that all TTO's are created equal...In fact most shave very differently from each other, even though they change blades the same way....And that Red-Tip is very, very well loved and has a huge fan club world wide... The blade gap is very respectable and not very aggressive, but the weight of the razor is more that the other Super-Speeds making it slightly more aggressive...So Gillette; being at the top of their game at that time; came up with a unique balence between weight and gap...and the results was a fine razor that has become much sought after... The Slim is another whole ball-game being Adjustable and all....and pretty heavy aswell....I love my Slim very much...but actually very seldom use it as I enjoy my fixed head razor so much...But I do recommend everyone have one in their arsenal...and many sware by them....including James Bond...Lol..Although in the books he swore by the Hoffritz HD Open Comb which was a rebranded Merkur which is still being made, but only marketed under the Merkur moniker...
