For me it isn't the best gear combo but the experience. I think I have more possible gear combos than I have days in my life at this point so I just randomly pick stuff sometimes and hope for the best. It usually works out but sometimes I get awful shaves and remember not to use that combo again.
Seconded, this is the must read of the day for me. I find new razors and soaps to try out and figure out what is generally good and what isn't.
My setup can be had for like $65ish, that includes 100 blades. Expensive gear is not necessary. My Utopia only costs around $15. My brush is $13. Cool new Avatar.
Highly suggested reading...it is kinda the core of the DE razor community around here. One of the most fun threads on the forum on a daily basis. There are many guys who are literally experts, and they love to help new guys.
