Hello fellow wet shavers. I live in Cork, Ireland. I have been using straight razors for the past few months. It is a great experience so far. Finally started to get good shaves without irritation and cuts. I think it had to do more with the prep than the sharpness of the razors. Got some new decent soaps lately. I am not planning on picking up another cartridge abomination ever again.. I do like vintage blades. I haven't tried any customs yet, but I have plenty of time to venture into that. I do try to hone my own blades, since I wasn't able to locate any honrmeisters close by. It seems to work for me. I look forward to interacting with you all... Regards, Sam
Welcome to TSD Sam @SammieM from the South Coast of the USA. Glad you signed up. Now we can talk all about it! You went straight to the deep end of the pool? I got into wet shaving the same way. An interest in straight razors lead me to soaps, brushes, & post shave products that I didn't use while cart shaving. It's generally accepted to use your familiar razor, even a cart, to clean up as you develop your technique with a new razor. That's your choice, there. Honing... That's what lead me into other types of razors. I've tried several styles of shavette because of the ease of popping in a fresh blade over the expense and learning curve involved in sharpening my own. Good luck with your journey and don't be shy about asking questions. If you don't find the answers searching the database, start a new thread!
Hehe, sink or swim time. I have only vintage blades. I restored few, broke a scale on a nice Red Injun ( still looking for original replacement). And honed them all. The first couple of times I didn’t have a strop, so I stropped on a newspaper with mediocre results. Had to clean up with a cart razor. After I got a strop and all the honing setup, didn’t have the need to clean up anymore. I still nick myself at times, but rarely now. Hopefully it will only improve from this point.
