  1. Thanks for all the input. I did take the plunge. I bought the Edwin Jagger DE 86bl, which seems very similar to the 89 but with a faux Ivory handle, it was about $10 less, though. Yes, lol, I know faux means fake. :) It came with 5 blades. I also bought the VDH premium shave set (soap, bowl and boar brush). I got it all at amazon for $41. I think I did pretty good for a starter. Can't wait for it to arrive. Next,I guess I have to work on a stand, as I'm sure the brush shouldn't be stored sitting on it's handle. Thanks again for the input folks.

Damn I missed this post. Sounds like a great deal + the 20 blades it comes with. Oh well, don't have a time machine, I already did the deal at amazon and there's always a better deal. :)

  2. Back when I could still walk upright, I belonged to this softball forum, well I still do but since I can't plat anymore, I don't go there much. Anyway, I thought a lot of those dudes where crazy as they would/could own upwards of 25 softball bats. I see this site as being very similar;). Hard to believe some peeps can be so passionate about shaving but This site is evidence that they can.:):happy096::happy096:. So keep up the good work, I'm learning a lot, which is nice at my age. Thank you all for being so welcoming, too.:thanks:

I agree. This place is great! It's turned a daily chore that I avoided whenever possible into something I look forward to and enjoy every day.

As a Brit! And an old one at that, even at my age there is always something new to learn, into older age and just started my collection, forums and learning experiences gained from other users have given me the confidence to start DE shaving, even like I say, at my age. Long may it continue...

Welcome to TSD! I've been at this about five months now. I started with a Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Classic, and it's still my favorite razor. I would describe it as "mild" rather than "aggressive." If you have a Rite Aid nearby, you can find cream by The Real Shaving Company. All you have to do is point the brush at it and it lathers. :) Good luck, and enjoy the shaves.

Welcome to The Shave Den, Scott! :signs046:

Store the brush on it's handle or not on it's handle. Doesn't matter, as long as you don't close a wet/damp brush up where air doesn't circulate (ie - a bathroom/medicine cabinet)

  15. Won't storing the brush on its
handle force any moisture into the handle?

No, regardless of whether you store it bristles up or down, you should shake out as much moisture as you can. What's left will be pulled out by capillary action more than be pulled in by gravity.

A stand for display purposes is fine if you want one, it won't hurt anything, but it's not necessary.

I store my brushes on the handles, I have no issues at all with the handles. I swirl the brush in the palm of my hand till comes clear, then I gently squeeze the excess water out, give two shakes, swirl on the towel. Then I dry the handle and store it handle down. I rotate 8 brushes, every brush gets a turn and is always fully dried too.
