I was de-dunking a horse brush in Oxy-Clean one time, and forgot. It was a brown haired brush, and probably only 3/4 in the water. It turned it to a light tan in a diagonal line. I guess I learned to be careful with the Oxy-Clean.
Not much to add here. The last few Paladins and my Stirling Finest that I have purchased were quite funky and they rinsed a brownish colored residue. So I did give them a shampoo with...well shampoo. Afterwards I did 2-3 palm lathers until the lather was completely white. Whenever I acquire a used brush (not often) these get a shampoo and a 5:1 water/vinegar soak. If I notice some build up at the ring, which is not unheard of with soaps such as Proraso in the tub, I will give these brushes the same vinegar soak. I have never used anything stronger than this solution and honestly, it's pretty rare. A good post-shave rinse will keep your brushes clean and looking good.
I generally use Borax instead of vinegar but honestly, so far it seems to be required maybe every decade or so. If I get a new2me old brush I will do a soak in Borax and Dish Detergent.
5 years in and I've never done anything special to my brushes, after use I rinse with water and lightly towel dry, let air dry until it's well dry. I hear oxy clean works great.
