What an interesting discussion - rather distinct differences. Reminds me of Gideon's army selection... I'm a swirler. Dipping seems an unnecessary step to me, but undoubtably I am a crude and unsophisticated plebe... a member of the great unwashed... evidence of the effects of poor breeding, illiteracy, and lack of impulse control. Snurdlers, I salute you!

Next time your at the ice cream shop, grab one of their sample spoons. Works great. I feel with a spoon I can be consistent in the amount of TOBS I'm using.

I use my finger. A dollop of cream gives me enough lather for a three-pass shave.

1st time using TOBS I used a dab from my finger, wiped it in my scuttle and had more foam then I needed for 3 passes. Really nice shaving cream.

I give my brush a slight jab into the cream then lather away

Just a small bit of advice. :)
Dipping your finger in a tub of shaving cream can contaminate the cream, and it might not happen fast but it can cause the shaving cream to grow nasties (mold, etc). If you have a large rotation of products, by the time you get back to that cream it could be quite disgusting.

Nice comparison....one of the great Bible stories.

Btw - I swirl. Once I get the rounded dip in the bowl, consistency is much better.

Picked up a stick this past weekend. Figured at $1.29 I'd give it a go. Not crazy about the scent, but, MAN, what a lather! Not something that I would pay shipping for, but since it was local...

Used to swirl my tub creams but now I use a spoon (a plain old coin silver spoon).
I like the spoon method better.

Buy a demitasse spoon that you will find at any Sur La Table or Williams Sonoma. Perfect for such use.

Thank you, Joanna. :) What do you suggest? I don't want to swirl the brush because of the consistency reasons. May I swirl the wet brush?

I use the end of a plastic knife. The wife is monitoring me closely to be sure I am not confiscating goods from the entire house!

I'm new at this....just had my first wet shave a couple of days ago. I did use TOBS(sandalwood) and used my finger to dip some into a bowl where I made my lather.

For those of you who swirl your brush - the brush is wet I presume? If so, doesn't water mix with the cream in the tub? This wouldn't be a good thing would it?

Sorry if I sound a bit naive, but I am curious.

Like several folks in this thread you could use a utensil of some sort.

If the cream is in a tub, I dip a dry brush in the tub.

I don't soak my brush though. I know many folks do soak their brushes. They'll have to answer your question for themselves. :)
