Looks like it. It's got that little notch or slot running down the length of the comb. The one in my pic doesn't have that. is that the difference I'm looking for? Look for one w/ no notch?

Yeah. I have considered that too. But I need to make sure I get the right thing. There are obviously different New Improves out there. I want one like Rodd has. I need to make him an offer he can't refuse!!!

Shep you shouldn't have to pay more than 20-30 but Rodd may be able to give some better info on that. I would hit the antique stores if I were you. I have picked up 3 or 4 New or Improved Gillettes that way. I am going to the large city of Billings MT this weekend and they have some good antique stores. I will try to find one for you. I would also suggest the b/s/t.

Sometimes I wonder if the DE craze swept across the country in phases. All I have in antique stores around here are Old Types, Techs, and an occasional NEW or SS. Every antique store has had at least one 1924 Ever-Readys and 2-3 Rolls. I have yet to find a New Standard.

From what I can tell in your pic, this is what you have (pic borrowed from Mr-Razors superb site.

Ok. here we go. Same vendor, same price as that other one I linked to. This looks like the deal right? There's another New Standard over there for $250 bucks. I ain't payin' that.

Now the same razor came in multiple cases and it is the case that makes it a Bostonian. They were also Richwood and Algonquin cases at least of that same razor. There are some NEW razors that were sold in Bostonian cases as well, so you have to check the head. The New Standard had the two alignment pins like an original Old Style Gillette, or Merkur, Lux, Muehle Pinsel....

Unfortunately on eBay, searching for the name does next to nothing because so many razors are in the wrong case or no case and the sellers don't know what they have. Often the pictures are the wrong angle to see if the head uses pins or groove.

That looks like what you want... but at least one of the teeth has been bent.

Justin did you check that second link I just put up? From the pics and disassembly that looks just like the one Rodd sent me. I really don't care about cases or names. It's the razor I want, and this one is $40. What do you think?

We cross posted there. So ok. #1 I could carefully bend that tooth back right? #2 Even if I couldn't would that one bent end tooth really matter do you think?

Bending the teeth back.... maybe. I had a tooth on a cooper snap off when I tried that. I believe I saw a post once where Rodd or Cooncatbob had a New Improved/Standard have a tooth break off when that was tried. I have straightened out some Old Style teeth without a problem. However, I had another that felt like it partially broke. It looks fine but it gave too quickly when it finally started bending back.

How will it affect the shave? I can't answer that.

There are a few that are active auctions that I am watching. I would hate to get in a bidding war with you; however, as they might go beyond what I am prepared to pay on this paycheck, I will PM you the auctions.

Got your PM thanks. I have found a couple over there as well. On one the reserve has not been met. The other is that BIN. As mentioned before my eBay account is locked from inactivity. I guess I need to fire it up. Can't do that now. It appears these razors are obtainable anyway which is one concern addressed. Thanks Justin.

Yeah, I wasn't paying full attention. The link you posted for the BIN was a bar handled NEW, AFAIK, which is what I have in the pic I posted. That BIN is way, way over priced.

What you like is the Bostonian which is different. It looks like you have a NEW in that lot from Rodd, I'm not sure if you've tried it yet. It's the 2nd one up from the bottom on the left (the one right above the TTO - Sheraton?). I'm still learning, too.

I have yet to try a New Improved, and I'm not sure what a New Standard is - I first heard of that one about 5 posts ago .

Then you get the Old Types with the thin and thick caps. Then there's either the NEW or New Improved (I can't remember which) which has the different base plates (longer combs, different bends, I believe)....

    It gets a bit daunting.....

EDIT: You guys post way too fast....

I am with you Matt. I can't keep it straight either. I don't know how Rick, Asylum, Rodd, Justin or Scotty keep that stuff sorted out. Heck, I can't even remember my name some days:happy102

If the bottom plate has an arch that matches the top plate it is an old syle. The original old styles have a thinner cap/comb then the later Old Styles.

If the bottom plate is flat but it still uses pins to align the blade it is a new improved/standard

if the bottom plate has a groove and notch to align the blade - it is a NEW.

If it has posts that go up instead of down, it is a Goodwill

If the bottom plate has a safety bar - it is a tech.

of course there are many different varieties of each, different handles, slightly different heads.

Yes pls. Do that. I have no time to hit antique stores here plus as mentioned previously I don't even know where any are located.

I need to go home and look at the razor and compare it to the sheet Rodd sent me to see which one's I've used. I know about the Bostonian because it's the first one I used, and I was really impressed. Rodd says New Improved and New Standard are pretty much the same thing--I think. I did not like the Merkur. It didn't shave close. Also I've used a couple other of those gold colored ones with average results. Funny because they look pretty much the same to me, but there must be subtle differences.

Very good. I like the New Improved/Standard w/ the pins. I think we've established that by now though. :D

I have a printout that Mr. Razor posted in one of my threads about keeping them all straight that I take with me when I go antiquing... I'm starting to get it, a little. But there are so many different nuances....

So, in a nutshell, what makes a New Improved and a New Standard different from each other? Because on my little printout, it only lists a New Improved and a NEW (along with the tech, Old Type, and Goodwill) Here's the link to my thread....

And, I have to agree with Justin, I only find (usually) a 1912 Gem/1924 Ever Ready, Tech, or Old Type when I'm out antiquing.... usually ;)
