    Yay for Jen!

Did you already turn in your forms for next year? In that case, what happens now?

not quite yet, april 3rd I pick a room

edit: I really want to live off campus but my mom seems to think that I'm 5 years old. So next year I probably will just live off campus to save the money.

I just realized that I almost past the edge where I empathize with the parents more than I do the college kids.

But then I think of my controlling mother and I am ready to shout at Jen to go for it!

the thing is it would save about $4000 a year for the next 3-4 years while I'm here, it's just killing me to not save that money. I also already have a good roommate lined up but I'd be living with a guy  I didn't quite get that far into the plan when talking with my parents though.

Git you sum!!! <$30....I wouldn't pay more than that....

and if that doesn't work, I know where I can get two sets for $30 - they're each missing parts, but between the two you can have one nice complete set... ;) :D

I may have to hit you up for some help then, Mordecai...Stupid questions, like:
    1) To hone/strop the blade, you just move the handle back and forth? that's it, no "technique" or anything?
    2) How necessary is it to "work" the strop like you did? A little light high grit sanding? Oil (mink, neet's foot, etc...)?

    That's all I can think of offhand.....:D

well that is where the problem is. My parents are very vague people. I have a loan taken out in my name only for school with a giant interest rate because they refused to co-sign. They say they're going to pay for some of it, but how am I suppose to believe that? they never say how much or when, just "some of it". So I'm not sure who'd be paying but all the money is in my name.

I know this sounds like sacrilige but bare with me. Have any of you guys ever considered powdercoating a particularly ugly razor? I'm thinking of an ugly tech I've got that would look awesome in stark white. We've all talked about razors being "a shaver, not a looker." Well, why not make it a looker too? We think nothing of custom shaving brushes and scuttles, so why not custom safety razors?

Any of you ever painted a razor? Any tips, advice, or words of caution?

I'm sure different types of paint might work better than others...

    What do you think?

I would think that powder coating would be fine for the handle and underneath the head, but would powder coating make the head texturized? I know.. not all powder coating objects have that bumpy feel, but that was my first concern upon reading your question.

I would also wonder about the drag factor with the paint you choose... would it have the proper slip?

I'm thinking of a glossy finish. I might be mistaken, but can't you get a gloss finish with powdercoat?

Is the loan for tuition, room & board, both? If it pays the room and board, and you're the only one on the note and making payments, then you should be able to live where you want to live. If it will save you money, then it's that much better. To me, unless they are actively paying on it regularly and right now, then they can't have a say. You can take Underwater Basketweaving and live....well, wherever...

I would think the Testers model paints would work well. Paint one up in bright Dia de los Muertos colors :D

You know, what's truly scary is that I had something very similar in mind. I've thought about doing an "art razor" with a psychedelic theme. I mean, how many times have you seen a basic tech with so much brassing and so many corroded spots and thought to yourself, "no one is ever going to clean that up and shave with it." That's the little guy I'm thinking of making into a "Behold! This is a one-of-a-kind work of art and I'm about to accidentally drop it in the sink because I can't resist shaving with it" razor.

I also thought about testors air-brush paint. Somewhere I've got a really nice airbrush and a small compressor, I need to dig those out...

Also, while I'm thinking about it---Polymer clay shaving brush handles, anyone?

What about painting with whatever, then finishing with some type of clearcoat to protect it? Something spray on, maybe....

What exactly is polymer clay? I've heard of it, but can't picture it off hand. And, yes, I know....Google is my friend. :prrr

Yeah I'm the only one, the only reason they still have any say is they pay for my car insurance and won't let me take the car. By next summer I'll be able to buy a new car so I can deal with one more year of dorms before getting an apartment off campus.

Sculpey or similar... it's a sort-of-plastic clay that comes in lots of different colours.

Uhm... add "busty wench" to that list, would ya?

and we also need "climate controlled lathering station" for brush testing purposes.
