As for all the debate about which would kick whom.... Best things posted was the argument about the empire being the benign entity and the stuff about Endor.... But I need to break away and get ready...

And, while the Empire might have been better organized and more effective than the Republic that came before it, that doesn't necessarily make them "good".
The Emperor was like Hitler.
His initial moves did great things for his country, most people didn't mind the police state because it seemed a lot better than the condition the nation was in after 1918.
However, beneath his beneficent facade, there was an undercurrent of hatred against a particular group.
For Hitler it was the Jews and to a lesser extent, all non-Aryans.
For the Emperor it was the Jedi and to a lesser extent, all non-humans.
The Emperor's rise to power was marked by the systematic extermination of all Jedi.
Also, you don't get to see a lot of this in the movies, but the Empire treated non-humans as second class citizens.
Sure, they employed bounty hunters of other races in their efforts to track down the Rebels, but how many aliens did you see buttoned up in those Imperial officer uniforms?
Never trust the Empire... ask a Wookie first.
