I don't have any specific questions at the moment. I haven't found any B&M stores short of going to Chicago (which I am not doing just for a pen). I think my mind is racing on other things because I can't make sense of things at the moment and the FAQ on FPN is just a bunch of broken links that after manually fixing is just a link to a discussion thread. So it is not conducive to my mental process and I am just getting frustrated over there. Reviews aren't organized in any way that I can quickly see, and the search won't work until you set up an account.... Top it off that work is censoring most of the pen pics... (IT people must know about Bong's pens).

In regards to the knotty badger pen.... COOL
In regards to your straight. .... OUCH!

Let me know if you have any direct questions, Justin. I'd be more than glad to help. Actually... if you'd like, I have a pen I could loan you if you'd like to try out a very basic fountain pen. Let me know if you're interested.

Jen - if you're around, I've got one I could lend you too.

    Too subtle?

    Too obvious?

Too offensive? If it is, ladies, please let me know, and I'll change it out.

Well, I crawl out of my hole for music tag too, but yeah, you're kind of right! :D

I've never tried one of the Swishmix inks, but I hear good things about them. I like Legal Lapis - it dries quickly and permanently, and it's a cool color if you like light denim blues. I've got an unopened bottle of Route 66 Blacktop Black (a Noodler's exclusive for Sam's and Frank's annual road trip from Ft. Madison to L.A.). I'll bet it's a very fast drying ink, but I just can't bring myself to pop the top (yet).

Try Pentrace. It's a linear message board with no forums, but is easier to comprehend than FPN (usually).

Try these to start learning about Fountain Pens:
    Penspotters -- http://www.rickconner.net/penspotters/

    Richard's Pens -- http://www.richardspens.com/
Look under "Reference Pages" in the sidebar -- lots of information; a commercial site, but very good nonetheless; Richard is well respected among the FP community.

I'm not Tom, so I hope you don't mind me answering... I have not tried them. But, I have read good things about the SwishMix inks. I've been trying to find a sample of Noodler’s SwishMix Tahitian Pearl, for some time. Since the ink is exclusive, Pear Tree Pens -- http://www.peartreepens.com/ -- doesn't offer it in their wonderful samplers.

Has anyone checked out the The Harmless Dilettante's ink reviews: http://harmless-dilettante.blogspot.com/ ? She is quite amazing -- huge breadth of ink reviews. In her reviews, she notes drying times.

unfortunately my campus book store didn't have any fountain pens so it looks like I'll be getting one off the internet, how easy is it to refill cartridges and where do I get all the tools I need?

Thanks, I'm going to send you a PM. Is there any disadvantage to using a vintage pen? the only reason I'm uncomfortable with vintage razors is they tend to collect hard to remove fuzzy green soap scum that freaks me out. If there is nothing more messy/annoying/gross/weird about vintage pens then I'm all for trying it.

Dom, you're awesome and I truly appreciate the offer but here on campus it's not easy to get the proper packaging to mail something back to you and I'd feel terrible if it got damaged :(

Gatto, I am not finding any Pilot Varsity pens here either. However, I saw that Office Depot (do you have those near you) had a Yafa starter pen with 6 diffferent color cartridges for $12.95. I didn't get it at the time because I didn't see any refill inks. I hate stores that sell pens and printers but not the ink refills. Even on the Yafa site, I am not seeing any refill cartridges. So what gives? Anyway, I might pick it up the next time I am in the Office Depot direction. I wanted to avoid cartridges and just get a piston fill; however, that would have to be an online order.

Dom, Tom, others... When a pen says it doesn't come with a converter, what does it have? Is it just a brand specific cartridge system?

    gatto and Etoyoc,

Sorry I pointed you to something you couldn't find.

I only have one Varsity, but I am willing to give it to one of you. Umm... you two will have to pick who gets it. You can see the pen here: http://www.pilotpen.us/products/fountainpens/. It is a very good trial fountain pen -- medium nib, smooth, cheap... While it is disposable, some people like this pen so much, they will refill it with a syringe (I don't recommend this for you.). The one I have has black ink. I haven't used it much. This pen led me down the Fountain Pen trail pretty quickly.

If the pen doesn't go out tomorrow, I won't be able to send it out until next Tuesday.

Those pens primarily use cartridges, but with a converter you can use ink from a bottle. The only real downside is the converter takes up space, so the pen doesn't hold as much ink.
