Pens are cool, especially when they have ink.

I'm awake a bit early, it seems.
Thank goodness I went to bed early as well, or I would be rather miffed.

    So... where's the coffee?

All this pen talk made me break out my fp and ink. I have the special ink for fpn and inked it up. Currently have the starry night ink in there.

I'm honestly a bit confused, these pens are so pretty and complex and yet the ballpoints of today are so boring and simple... I don't see how this was designed first, or why it was even replaced with the ballpoint.

It writes quite well. I broke down and bought all 3 of them, first impressions are it's nice it's a light blue that dries rather fast.

that is a truly unfortunate picture. I was trying to come up with a snappy statement but it trumps anything I can think of. that boy should go hide in the corner and feel sorry for himself.

Any of the teachers around here have experience with young children?

I'm not sure really. It's just something about Jenna and school.

She had a rough week at school, and the letter sent home from the teacher has left me with some questions.

Jenna has trouble following directions/doing as she's told. The teacher said it was "disturbing that Jenna was laughing at her own defiant behavior." I have several problems with the concept and wording. She's 5. The complexities of social interactions are probably a bit beyond her understanding, no matter how smart she is.

Then the teacher wrote that my ex should refrain from "conferring" with Jenna's social worker/school assistant. The social worker gets Jenna from the front of the school in the morning and drops her off in the afternoon. From what my ex says, the teacher doesn't come out there. So, how's he suppose to ask her about Jenna's day? And I don't see how asking about Jenna's day is "conferring".

I've never met the teacher. So, this is pretty much just speculation on my part. But, seems the teacher is stuck in her "this is how I've handled things for 25 years" mindset.

I don't have the letter or I'd type it all up for you guys to read, but there was other stuff that is just  in the letter.

One thing was, Jenna wouldn't follow directions during math, so the teacher took away Jenna's math book. So, Jenna started screaming, "Give me my book". You take any book away from Jenna, and she's going to scream. The teacher then put Jenna in time out. I feel it would have been better to either take Jenna away from the book or put her directly in time out when she wouldn't follow directions.

    I dunno......

As far as I'm concerned using the term disturbing when refering to a 5 year old isn't how things should be handled by anybody, unless the child is killing small animals and destroying their toys. Either way, I haven't taken child psych yet so I'm not going to pretend I know what I'm talking about but maybe you should speak to this teacher? it's possible that her behavior is very out of the ordinary for a 5 year old which is why the teacher is concerned. I'm sure if all the kids in this class behaved the way your daughter is there would be no reason for a letter to get sent home. Another thing to keep in mind is teachers spend a lot of time with a lot of kids year after year so I'm sure they have a good handle on what is to be expected and what isn't common behavior.

    Exactly.

    My ex is.

Children, and people for that matter, aren't text books. They're individuals. They don't all act the same.

My child is special needs. In a mainstream kindergarten class. Her life has been significantly different from your average 5 year old.

Teachers now and days communicate with parents through letters and notes, at least that has been my experience the last 3 years. So, the letter itself isn't anything out of the norm.

Also, I have experience with young children, and Jenna's behavior isn't out of the norm.

As a parent that has had multiple problems with my daughter's teachers and as a teacher myself, I always have a torn allegiance on these problems.

The typical classroom teacher is equipped to handle the normal student. Students with any special needs throw things off kilter. Yes, we have been mainstreaming students for years; however, many teachers have had exposure to a handful of students with special needs and haven't learned how to read them and their unique issues. From my experience it has been dealing with autism. Every child with autism has their own unique triggers and the stereotypical autism behaviors are just that... stereotypical and can't be applied to everyone on the spectrum. Unfortunately, some teachers don't get it and try to apply a one-size-fits-all approach. Even when my child was in a special needs classroom, we continued to have problems because the staff was treating her like she had textbook emotional disability and not a child with Asbergers part of autism.

If possible, I would try to schedule an unobtrusive conference with the teacher to talk about Jenna. I am assuming she has a GEI or OHI plan (or whatever the acronyms are in your state). If nothing else the meeting could be about to discuss those issues and then get a feel for the teacher and decide how to approach the other issues from there.
