it has been a long, long time since I watched any STTNG. I was a huuuuge fan when it was airing. I wanna pick up the dvds but I'm afraid it hasn't aged well.

This is a long way of saying that I'm not sure of which episode you're talking about with "lock and load." I know who Jonathan Frakes is (I never could understand why women didn't think he was creepy) but I don't know the episode.

EDIT: So I looked up the quote and it's no wonder I don't recognize it- it's from Insurrection, which I haven't seen, don't want to see, and really really won't see now that I've read quotes from the film.

ooh. nicotene withdrawl. that's right up there with caffeine withdrawl. I'll pray for you, if you'd like.

Actually, "Lock and load!" was from one of the movies. Yeah, Frakes is one of the most ham-fisted directors I've ever seen. His turn as director on the "Librarian" movies was pretty decent, but I can't imagine how much better they would have been if he had been kept off the project. I like him okay as "number one" but his directing is definitely "number two."

I looked up the STTNG episodes he directed and I must say- I still remember them because I thought they were bad at the time. That means, with age and "maturity" added, those episodes must be really bad.

Exactly. Conversely, I can remember watching episodes and thinking "aah, that was just right" and then finding out that LeVar Burton directed. Without fail, if Burton directed, I liked it, if Frakes was behind the lens, there's a 99.99% chance it was utter crap.

man, for once ya'll're talkin' over my head...

    check out this flashlight mod...
I've got to stop this searching around crap, I'm finding myself wanting to put an LED in a Maglite Solitaire, the little keychain one that I think actually produces anti-light. I got one several years ago at me and Micah's previous PoE with the thoughts process that a tiny flashlight would serve a good purpose of always being on hand for those times the switches/racks needed maintenance.
Ha...I think Wint-O-Green Lifesaver put out more lumens due to triboluminescence (which, coincidentally, happened to be one of the coolest sermon topics I ever preached from )

I think I can break this down so everyone can understand:

Example of a Jonathan Frakes directed episode:

Title- Worf gets a kid. (okay, not the real title. I'm doing this from memory. A very rusty memory.)

Biased Synopsis- Worf, the tough, battle hardened Klingon, "miraculously" meets an ex-girlfriend and finds out he has a son. Worf's son is a panzy. Cue syrupy violins. I think the ex-g.f. dies. Cue more syrupy violins and tugging of heart strings. Episode ends with his son becoming less of a panzy and Worf losing some serious Klingon street cred. Overall very syrupy and cheesy.

Example of LeVar Burton episode (Burton's the guy that did Reading Rainbow. Very cool guy.)

    Title- The Pegasus. (actual title)

Biased Synopsis- Riker goes on a secret mission. There's some backstory about Riker's relationship with the Captain. No syrup. No cheese. Straightforward tense plot, well told.

Now, maybe Frakes chose a bad script to direct. If that's the case, then he kept making the same mistake throughout his directing career on STTNG, because the Worf-kid episode was the second time he'd directed that kind of plot. The first being "Data gets a kid." ugh.

A Fistful of Datas - One of my favorite episodes, was directed by Patrick Stewart.

    Tea, Earl Grey, hot.

    My favorite STTNG quote:

    Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra.
