Just finished setting up my dedicated e-reader device. I've been working on it since 4:30. I finally got it working. Pic related: It's my ereader



I set mobipocket reader up on my old palm and on my netbook. Now, I can just sync from the netbook to the palm, and I can carry my e-library with me! Added silkdimmer so that I can drop the screen brightness down to "squinty dark" so as to make the battery last just a little longer. It's not an e-ink display. The font is pretty tiny, and it doesn't have near the "wow" factor of say a Kindle, or a Nook, but it's something to tide me over until I can afford one or some generous soul takes pity on me and gives me an ereader. I call it "Schmindle."

Gee... I don't even know where my connector and all is for my Tungsten...

Actually, I read a some books on the Tungsten once upon a time.. Phantom of the Opera and umm.... Something else... I might have just been using a pdf reader at the time. I can't say it was that enjoyable of experience. That is probably why I am not fired up about Kindles or Nooks. Now if the new Kindle for $190 that is out in September has a real working web connection with 3G and WiFi... I may have to think again.

But then again... that is really what killed my use of the Tungsten. I always had to sync to do everything and no web access or wifi.

 

No web access and lack of wifi are what I would call "features." I find that having stuff like that on my netbook really interferes with e-reading because I'm far too easily distracted. What I'm really waiting for, though is for ereaders to drop into the sub-$100 range. I'd even be willing to sacrifice eink for a decent reflective monochrome lcd (like the old palms had) if that meant I could get one for around $50 or $60. It's only a matter of time, and as Christmas gets closer, you know they're going to just steadily drop in quality and price. Cheap chinese e-reader, here I come. When Big Lots starts selling "Coby" brand e-readers, I'll be happy. Seriously, were are all the "Amasong Cindle" ereaders? I would have thought China would be churning these things out like "iPeds" and "mp5" players.

Another morning at work at 5:10 AM. However, I am sitting here at 7 and I can't think of what else I *have* to do this morning. I hate it when you get so swamped that when you finally have some free time you get that nagging feeling like you forgot something importa....

BTW: I dug out the Tungsten and finally found its charger. So we will give it a spin again this weekend maybe.
