Take time for a serious post, please

whoa....I'm just now stumbling over this thread at B&B, not sure if anyone here at TSD has mentioned it, but I'll post a link here, and if it's already common knowledge then that'll be that, but if it's new revelation, one of the mods may consider making it more prominent.

Take A Deep Breath & Then Walk Into The Fire

Seeing as most folks are familiar with Sue at Saint Charles Shave, you'll want to consider having a look, if you aren't already aware.

My God. I had no idea , Jim. Having spoken to Sue many times on the phone over the last few years, this is just heartbreaking news. She has always been such a pleasant person to speak with. Surely all of our hearts go out to the entire family right now. May God be with you, Sue.

Hey Jim, I have a coffee question for you. How does the coffee from an aero-press differ from the coffee you get from an espresso maker? Is it essentially the same "potency"?

sol92258 I have no earthly idea

It's quite different, as far as the coffee itself, of course.
Comparing apples to apples in potency, I can't really say, not having an espresso maker myself, can't really compare.
Some similarities they have are fairly short brew times.
Basically, when you use the Aeropress according to directions, you're almost essentially making an espresso with the initial pressing. Basically you're kinda making a coffee concentrate, in a manner of speaking. Then you add hot water to taste for a typical americano style coffee (typical drip coffee we're used to).
As far as potency, you can control several factors with the Aeropress, such has how much grounds you add, how long you let it steep, and how much hot water you add after pressing. You can make a nice, smooth, easy drinking cuppa, or you can make a cup that makes the hairs you grew grow their own hairs, if you catch my drift :D
But in the end, it's still two different processes of brewing java, and hopefully Justin or someone more coffee-knowledgeable than I will hop in soon and fill in any info I missed, or correct my mistakes, but I will say I love my Aeropress, in fact, in may just be time to heat some water up....

EDIT: I also should add an obvious difference, and the biggest technical difference between Aeropress and french press - that the AP uses a paper filter, where as the typical FP uses a metal mesh filter, and of course an espresso typical uses a metal filter (to my knowledge, I may be wrong, but it's my understanding an espresso maker uses high pressure to push hot water through the fine coffee grounds, and that would require a metal filter)

Hey Jim, hope it does not take too long to get here, as I am genuinely eager to suck down a double cup of the juice straight from the press. No added water, just a little cream & sugar. How about just using regular coffee with it? I already get the big bags of Green Mountain. It is decent, I guess. You ever had it?

Been busy... Work, daughter's therapy appointment, waiting in line at the post office to get my Parker 98R, blogging... you know, busy stuff.

    Aeropress vs. Espresso....

Aeropress makes good coffee and it is espresso like, but not the same. You just can't get the same amount of pressure. Like Jim said, the aeropress uses a paper micro-filter. However, some people have taken the permanent mesh filters and cut them down to aeropress size. Even doing that, you still don't get true espresso pressure. All in all, it is great coffee. It just isn't espresso. That isn't a bad thing - unless you want espresso.

If can take just regular coffee. You don't need fine grind. However, with really course ground, the water drips through long before you press. Which is one of the advantages of the inverted method. Jason, Jim... check out the inverted method - it truly does make a better batch that the regular method.

Parker 98R arrived today. OMG - that is one seriously heavy razor. I love the bulldog style knurling though. Will have to give it a go in the morning. Too bad I didn't think to grab a fresh blade and load the razor before wife went to bed. I keep all my spare blades and razors not in rotation in a cabinet in the bedroom. I guess I will give it a trial run with a 4 day blade... eek!

no, never tried it, but any coffee you like can be used in it. I'm a fan of 8 o'clock brand and Community Special Reserve breakfast blend, but I have used plain old Folgers and it came out well.

Like Justin said, you can't use too course a grind (naturally, this only applies if you grind it yourself), or it won't brew long enough; likewise, too fine of a grind will cause a problem with too much pressure and hard to press. Standard drip grind is fine.

I still haven't tried the inverted method, after all this time from Bong's mention of it, and you reminding me a few days ago, looks like I need to plan on it tomorrow :D

Look like now I need to search for this "inverted method". Great, the wife will come in and I am making coffee upside down. That should be fun explaining.
