reading something about the "Criterion Collection" is leaving Netflix and going to Hulu, and how it' a major loss for Netflix, etc....except I have no idea what the Criterion Collection is, so I guess it's no real loss to me :D

As a fan of the Criterion Collection, this is a total bummer. Thankfully, however, I have physical copies of most of the criterion movies I want.

The Criterion Collection (at least in it's early days) had a reputation for only including high quality transfers of excellent movies...Rushmore, The Royal Tanenbaums, The Life Aquatic, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, and Brazil are just a few examples of Criterion at its finest. They usually include excellent commentaries and great bonus features as well, often including documentaries about the making of the movie. The transfers are beautiful... I think they start out with the highest quality film stock they can find, then do a little restoration on it before putting them in beautiful cases with excellent artwork on them. I'm a huge fan of the collection, but they can be a little pricey.

You may have heard to me refer to Anchor Bay as "The Poor Man's Criterion." That's what I'm referring to. Anchor Bay has a habit of turning out excellent editions of notoriously (so) bad (they're good) movies (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, etc.).

    Just ordered some boots!

I'm kind of excited and I can't wait for them to get here.

I'm also kind of lame for being excited over buying shoes...online.

    I hope they fit.

The site has a pretty good reputation, and they're a US company, and their products are US made.

    I'm anxious.

    It's ridiculous.

for a while they also put out notable old-er movies. Cronenberg's Videodrome and Pasolini's Salo for example. In some cases, the criterion version was the only available version.

Authentic criterion prints of Salo used to go for upwards of $500 due to rarity.

What all this means is that Netflix's selection is going to be narrowed a bit.

    Boot update:

Just got a call from Renboots... they said their boots run about a half-size small, and wanted to confirm before sending that the size I ordered would be okay before they filled the order. Customer service?!? I--I--I'm not sure how to handle this... We briefly discussed the sizing, and what to do if the boots didn't fit...I'm just stunned by the care they seem to be putting into my order.

It saddens me that the state of customer care in this country has fallen to a point that I'm actually shocked when a business gets it right.

Which can't help with the whole "online streaming only" plans they're rolling out.

I drive an old car--'96 Corolla--which has always run like a champ, but today on the way home it started making a horrible grinding noise. I thought maybe it was done for. Took it to the shop and they said it was the idler pulley, $100 to fix. Love it.
