Just a side note.... I am proud of my workplace, they donated over $300 towards the autism walkathon my family will be walking in tomorrow. It looks like it will be nice weather as well. Woo Hoo!

On the second point, your needs interest me, I have never thought about doing what you are doing. If memory serves binaural recording requires 2 mics. So, if you are bringing a lap thats not a big deal but im not sure how a dvr would like that. This looks interesting.

 

first thought that came to my mind was do something with Arduino to set up the dual mics. However, as I haven't actually done anything to Arduino myself, I never made the comment.

 

A quick experiment with some cheap earbuds does in fact yield stereo recording on my netbook. I'm thinking of rigging up something that I can just drop the netbook in a backpack and wear some headphones with mics mounted on the outside. I know it won't quite be true binaural, but a good stereo recreation is a start.

Yeah, but you have to be right up on them. They work the same way the old-timey microphones work, I think. They aren't very efficient, though. Plus, most modern soundcards have a stereo microphone jack. Try it out.

Plug your earbuds into the mic jack, fire up audacity, and talk into one bud and then into the other. It's pretty neat. You might have to crank up the gain a bit to get it to work right, but it works.
