Saw the 2 part Library episode of Dr. Who for the first time last night. I'm not sure if I like the direction they're taking the series. It's starting to feel too gimmicky to me.

and this: You can't spell 'Mark Hamill' without 'Arkham'.

    What's your definition of "gimmicky"?
Cause that could be used to describe the show from 1963 till present. Depending on your definition.

Went so see Shark Night 3D this weekend, was actually better than I thought it would be.
And the 3D effects are quite great...the sharks, not as much, some were disproportionate - not meaning bigger than they ought to be, they were appropriately sized, just that some things, like sharks, are hard to CGI and make look right. Head on shots the mouth and head look weird, but besides that they looked good.
What had the best effect, to me, was the little details, like debris and bubbles in the water that were the most incredible.
It was, naturally, rather predictable for the most part, but still an enjoyable flick.
Also, my wife and I had the entire theater to ourselves.
We walked in, there was one lady with her son....wife and I looked at each other and thought "Is she crazy?".
They were gone about 5 minutes into the movie
Quite a bit of language and "suggestive themes", but no "direct" nudity, just a bit of language, explosions, and chewed corpses.

I haven't been to a movie theater in about a year an half......

Still haven't seen a 3d movie, keep meaning to, then I never get around it.

There are worse things to miss than movies.

We could do Shakespearean sonnets, but that's a lot more work.

    Like that last step?

    I hear it's a doozy.

Exactly! The last time I did that it really hurt!

I know the show has always been that way, but this whole foreshadowing kick they've been on in the latest few seasons is wearing a bit thin. Especially when they introduce characters (like Dr. River Song) that clearly imply that they plan to do some pretty major stuff with the doctor at some point in the (possibly) near future. Giving him a new daughter was a bit over the top, but now I'm supposed to buy into him either getting a new wife, having new children, or grandkids? It will likely either happen during the next Doctor's run or it will be pushed way into the future and never be fully explained. I'd rather they don't explain it instead of making it an off-hand joke like they did with The Face of Bo.

You aren't doing it right. ;)

The show is constantly re-inventing itself to a degree. I didn't care for the way RTD foreshadowed things as he took too many "easy outs". Moffet does get very arc heavy as a producer (Moffet & Matt Smith started at the same time). I like the current long-game arcs, but feel they need to get wrapped up soon and not take over the show for more than about two seasons. While the show has a few constants, so much is flexible and needs to be to keep this very long running show interesting. The downside is you'll likely run across something you don't like in these changes. The upside is if you don't like something, it isn't going to last that long anyway.

You make some good points, and I understand the impetus for the long arcs, but I'm just afraid of it turning into something like LOST.

At least they've moved on from namedropping Torchwood every 3 seconds. That got real old, real fast.

Every time I decide I want to try watching Dr. Who, I get about 10 minutes into it and decide not to anymore.

The downside side is if you do like something, it isn't going to last that long, either?

In some cases. Outside a few key elements: the TARDIS, the Doctor (as long as you're not attached to a specific actor), and epic level save the world or universe stories, anything can change at any time. Really, you don't get a show that can have the level of staying power of DW without major change on a regular basis.

The guy who invented Doritos died.

They had to special order a coffin that was 3 times as large as he was.

    dude, that was cheesy....;)

and, no matter how hard I try, I've never been able to get that Doritos commercial with Ali Landry in it out of my mind.....so that makes it 0 for 0 so far

A certain Tom Baker episode comes to mind. The Brain of Morbius. I won't spoil the plot for you but it defines the word, "gimmick."

Oooh. That burns. Mainly cause there's some truth to it.
I think I know where you're at in the new Doctor episodes. I'm sorry to say it gets a lot worse before it gets better. I never liked Torchwood and I very nearly quit watching the Doctor at the end of RTD's time. The Waters of Mars, the End of Time, etc... are some of the absolute worst episodes in the revived series history, in my opinion. Even so they still aren't as bad as some of the episodes from the Colin Baker or Sylvester McCoy eras.

EDIT: oh, and yeah I've watched almost all of Colin Baker's episodes and I have plans to watch McCoy's. Apparently I'm a glutton for punishment.
