I have a 29g aquarium an the fish have started to slowly die. We have about 35 guppies ( including the babies). I checked the chemical levels last night and thy are completely out of whack! A 50% water change later, and: instructions to my wife about feeding them a little bit once a day, they seem a little better. I still think 2 or 3 more are going to die, but I hope to save the rest. The funny thing is though, the babies are fine and healthy, an it is the adults that seem sick. I thought it would be the other way around.

sorry to hear about your fish losses. good thing you caught the problem when you did!

late last week all the surfaces on our fish tank turned orange. It was kinda freaky. we checked the levels and they were okay, and then we decided to do a big water change/ cleanout. When we got to the filter we discovered it wasn't just filthy- it was deeeeeee-sgusting! Turns out they were brown diatoms.

Are we entirely sure it's not Friday? It feels like it should be Friday.

Scrubbing bubbles day for my DE's. I just realized when I was attempting to organize my disaster known as my shave den they've been neglected for a bit while I've been straight razor obsessed. Now they're all sparkly clean. Unfortunately I think I'm going to go through them for the next little while and sell some off as I move over more towards the SR side of the force.

I have a big structure in the middle of my tank and it seems like there may be some brown diatoms appearing there (well it's brown something anyway). My filter was fairly sick too. So I ran it under the tap for a good few minutes! I am happy the losses haven't been too heavy (yet). The count is one guppy (though I can't find 2 and another 2-3 are now resting on the bottom of the tank) and one swordtail (one of the two we had, passionately called "The Ladies" by my oldest daughter). The tank is overstocked too, but that is because of all the guppy babies we have (like 20)...Anyone want guppy fry? But I am planning on doing a few more 25-30% water changes every few days. I will be testing the water daily too until this incident is under control. :(

It must be a true reading. Temperature increases cause warmer, often moist, air to rise. It is condensing on the colder camera lens. Hence, the warmer thermometer came out blurry.

The colder thermometer is cooling the air around it, causing that air pocket to sink, as a result, the air over that thermometer is not condensing on the camera lens. Hence, the cooler thermometer is not blurry in the picture.

It is all about convection and density. It always is.

in another test, I placed both thermometers outside under the awning, side by side, and left them there for about 15 minutes. Checked the reading, same thing, one was about 8 degrees higher than the other....and that other one was about 5 degrees higher than actual temperature...wow

Or we could just take him out back and shoot him. Probably cheaper that way.
